Physical Description:

Dr Solkar, a Vulcan male of average height and build and coffee-coloured skin, would blend seamlessly into any background consisting of other members of his species were it not for his eyes. An uncharacteristically dark shade of blue, they constantly drift between a predatory attentiveness and an unfocused distance, reflecting his habit of perpetually scanning his environment and committing every facet of it to his working memory, before mentally withdrawing in order to rationalise about it as a vivid abstraction. Whilst on duty, he typically wears a doctor's coat over his uniform, in which he has personally embroidered a great number of pockets in which he stores a host of medical paraphernalia, from his tricorder and hypospray to a spare pair of cortical stimulators, especially for those moments when you simply must attach them to either side of someone's face to save them from brain death.
Solkar's face is mostly smooth, displaying a typical Vulcan aquilinity, and he sports a rather long nose. A barely noticable trio of scars adorns the right side of his neck, and the smallest finger on his left hand is not quite in alignment to that on his right.

Family and Background:
|
Solkar has no brothers or sisters, and his parents are both genetically predisposed to low fertility. His father, Turan, is a Professor of Historical Xenophilosophy on Vulcan with great skill at 3-dimensional chess, and his mother, T'lin, is a fifty-year long member of the hr'Mnah'te arm of the Vulcan legislature, where she consistently argues that Vulcan should play a more decisive role in interspecies politics. Solkar was born on the predominantly human colony of Archer IV in the city of New Canterbury, whilst his father was on research leave; engaged in a joint analysis of Aristotle's "Nichomachean Ethics" with a human academic resident on the planet. Solkar was two years old when he moved with his parents back to Vulcan.
Solkar has undergone the pon farr only once, six years ago, whereupon he mated with his betrothed; a half-Vulcan half-human named T'neira Nathalia; chief engineer on a freight vessel that carries specialised computer equipment between Vulcan and Mars, and an avid follower of interstellar Parisses Squares games. Since the mating, no pregnancy has occurred.

Personal Bio:
|
Doctor Solkar's first memory of Archer IV, the world on which he was born, was when he touched down on a shuttlecraft forty-two years later to commence his doctoral research on the local marsupial life forms. At this point, Solkar was a man who lived his life in the abstract; pure theory was all with which he was concerned, conceptual logic the only kind that he considered meritorious. However, after having spent a number of weeks amongst the primarily human residents of the world, he had developed a change of perspective. Whilst not being seduced by the human culture of emotional abandon, excessive sociality and selectively applied logic, his eyes had become opened to the sheer difference present in the universe. He realised that he could learn an enormous amount of knowledge; of a type quite different to that he had been gathering for five years at the Vulcan Science Academy, by exploring different cultures. Only at this point did he come to understand the Vulcan aphorism, "Infinite diversity, in infinite combinations."
After receiving his doctorate in Xenophysiology, Solkar spent a year volunteering with a Federation humanitarian project working to aid Bajoran refugees on Valo II. His biological expertise led him to be put to work as a medical assistant. In this role, he developed a great respect not only for the ethics of medical work, but for the almost aesthetic quality of the manner in which medical practice allows the logic of abstract science to flow into world of contingent reality. His head, therefore, had been turned once again. Instead of placing ultimate value on exploration and the acquisition of new knowledge, he came to prioritise the application of logical principles in an ethical manner.. His path to medicine had become set.
Despite learning a great deal very quickly from the doctors with whom he worked at with the humanitarian project, Solkar was far from being a qualified medical practitioner. Rather than returning to Vulcan, however, he applied to Starfleet Academy Medical School, where his dual background in biological research and relief work helped him to excel, and graduate as Salutatorian. Shortly after doing so, Solkar was posted to the USS Victory.
Solkar impressed several of the ship's senior officers after he rescued them from plasma fires in a collapsing pirate compound, which he achieved by dumping the contents of an appropriately placed coolant tank on the fires before dragging the wounded officers to safety. Later that year, Solkar was present in an accident involving a containment leak in a radiation source being installed in a new medical facility for the residents of Tholius II, for whom gamma waves have cellular regenerative properties. Although five of his colleagues were killed, including the ship's chief of engineering, Solkar survived by merit of his hardy Vulcan physiology, and the fact that he was standing further away than everyone else was from the radioactive material when it breached. Two years later, Solkar returned to Vulcan for the first time since leaving for Valo II, in anticipation of his first pon farr. After mating with his betrothed, Solkar was to be flown back to the Victory, but the shuttle he was on crashed on a hostile world. After surviving against terrible odds for 17 hours, Solkar was beamed away by a rescue craft just before being torn apart by a pack of native predators. Nevertheless, he was close to dying, as the beasts had slashed his neck and severed one of his fingers. He was losing blood freely. He was quickly returned to Vulcan where a major blood transfusion was performed, saving his life. Three weeks later he returned to the Victory. Shortly afterwards, he was promoted to Lieutenant Junior Grade, and the following year he was re-assigned to the USS Phoenix. Here, he was promoted to Lieutenant, despite irritating the CMO by creatively re-arranging the contents of the sickbay. After being threatened with demotion if he disturbed the medical equipment again, Solkar decided to design the optimal system by which medical equipment might be stored in a starship's sickbay for efficient access in emergency situations. Instead of the blood-gas infuser being stored in equipment storage unit 2, it would be lying about next to the most common spot where individuals are transported site-to-site from away missions in a medical emergency; the precise place one would want a blood-gas infuser if a crewman had developed respiratory complications whilst on a planet with a hostile atmosphere, and had only seconds to live without treatment. Solkar would spend hours on end poring over intricate diagrams, sickbay blueprints, comparative xenophysiology manuals and medical logs in his attempt to produce the most efficient arrangement. It is, in his view, only logical that a doctor should have the right tools to hand in the middle of a medical emergency.
Before having the opportunity to present his completed layout to the Captain, the ship was called upon to provide aid to the people of Taranko colony, following a devastating outbreak of plague. The CMO, despite his misgivings about Solkar, put him forward for commendation in his report, as his performance during the aid effort was exemplary; a product of his experience on Valo II. His skills led him to be requested by the Commander of Deep Space 6, whose family were native to Taranko colony, to be the station's new Chief of Infirmary. Upon arriving at the station, he had already devised the most efficient system by which the infirmary might be arranged, and within 26 hours the reality conformed to his design.
Roughly three years after Solkar had been posted to the station, a wounded Bajoran was beamed to the infirmary from his vessel, which promptly exploded as the warp core finally breached. A terrorist on the run from Cardassians, his pursuers finally turned up at the station, demanding their prisoner. Solkar insisted that he needed one more day to attend to his injuries, and the Cardassians agreed, provided that they were able to station guards around all exits to the infirmary. The Bajoran, whose name was Sauval Gaelen, spoke quietly to Solkar.
"Doctor?"
"Yes Mr. Sauve?"
"They... the Cardassians, they're going to take me aren't they?"
"That does appears to be their intent."
Sauval shuddered, closed his eyes and tried to master himself.
"I always hoped I'd get killed."
"What do you mean?"
"When fighting the Cardassians, I hoped they'd shoot me down, or I'd blow myself up or something. I don't want to die, I want to see a free Bajor again, but I have no family left, I have no reason to live other than my cause."
"What point are you attempting to make?"
"My point is that I'm terrified! I... I know what Cardassians... what those monsters do... I don't want that, I'd... I'd rather die."
Solkar fought for something to say. Never before had he been faced with a problem from someone lying in his infirmary that could not be dealt with via medical means.
"The fear you feel is an emotion, and it can be suppre..."
"Don't give me that talk, Vulcan. Maybe if I had years and years to master your meditative techniques I could make myself not be afraid. But I don't, so I can't! I... I need you to do something for me."
"If you require my assistance in escaping this facility, then I must dissapoint..."
"No, not that, there's no escape for me now. No escape but one."
"You wish for me to kill you?"
"No, I know you're bound by oath; an oath to do no harm. Just... when you put that away," Sauval gestured towards a hypospray beside his bed, one filled with painkillers. "Don't lock it with your security code. Just forget, everyone makes mistakes. Your Commander needn't know. Please? Maybe you think it's wrong, but it would save me, save me from a fate worse than death."
As Solkar looked at the desperate face of the man looking up at him, something suddenly passed through his mind, unbidden. It was pity, it was compassion, and it was a taste of the Bajoran's fear. Quickly, Solkar suppressed it, and reasserted his logical control.
"I cannot do what you ask Mr. Sauval. You are a criminal under Cardassian law, and must be brought to justice by their customs. I am unable to prevent this."
Sauval leapt forward and tried to grab the hypospray himself, but Solkar pinched his neck and he fell, unconscious, back into repose. Solkar applied a sedative, so that the Bajoran would sleep until the Cardassians took him, sparing him, at least, some of his fears.
The next morning, Solkar was called to Commander Lane's office. When he entered, he found her with a huge Cardassian male in military uniform. He looked furious.
"Doctor Solkar, please, take a seat," said his Commander. Solkar complied. "Are you aware that the patient in your infirmary died during the night?"
Solkar paused, and nodded.
"I discovered this shortly before you called me here. His death is regrettable."
"Do you know how he died?"
"I did not have the time to perform any..."
At this point, the Cardassian lunged into the conversation.
"He died due to an overdose of the painkillers you were giving to him!"
"Please!" Commander Lane stood up and glared at the Cardassian. Fuming, he returned to his seat. "Gul Renor is very disappointed by this, he believes that Mr. Sauval had a great deal of information on Bajoran terrorist activities that he had hoped to..." Lane's faced twitched slightly before ending her sentence. "...obtain. Now Doctor, do you know how Sauval might have ended up with over 5,000cc of neurotropic painkillers in his system; an amount that exceeds the lethal dose for his species more than 17 times?"
"The most likely reason is that I accidentally neglected to seal the medical storage unit in which the chemicals were stored. If this is the case, then I offer my sincerest apologies for the consequences."
The Cardassian stood up and shouted.
"This is outrageous! Somebody aboard this station allowed our prisoner to take his own life rather than face justice!"
"Gul Renor," Lane said, trying to calm him down. "You have heard my doctor, this was probably a mistake..."
"The only mistake is that the Federation believes that it can get away with compromising Cardassian security! I demand that a full investigation into this matter be undertaken, immediately!"
With that, Gul Renor stormed from the room to return to his ship. Commander Lane sat back down, and took a deep breath.
"Well," she said. "Unfortunately for him, Gul Renor does not dictate security policy aboard this station," she glanced at Solkar. "However, I do. As such, I believe that you should tell me everything you know."
Solkar remained stoic.
"You know," Commander Lane stood up and began to pace her office. "I used to believe that Vulcans were incapable of deception. This was before I joined Starfleet Academy. There I learnt that, although it is not impossible for them, it is extremely difficult. It would be like asking a Klingon to let a blood enemy walk past him on the street, unharmed. Or to ask a Bajoran, facing torture by the Cardassians, to calm his fears like a Vulcan would. How difficult was it for you Doctor, to lie to me and Gul Renor just now?"
Solkar, again, did not speak.
"That hard eh? Well, Solkar, it seems now that I know what kind of a man you are."
"What kind of man is that, Commander?"
"The kind who finds it easier to lie to a superior officer, in spite of everything that he is, than to let a complete stranger suffer."
Solkar returned to his silence.
"I am placing an official reprimand in your record, for failing to properly secure a medical storage unit. You're dismissed."
