Physical Description:
|
: Jesse Graham is a large-built man, with broad shoulders; while he is large, he manages to not be overly imposing, having a ready wide smile that often peeks out from beneath his bushy moustache. He does have a bit of a “weathered” look to him, having grown up as a cowboy and a rancher. His darkly-tanned skin is toughened and weather-beaten, and the laugh lines and crow’s feet on his face look like they have been etched into leather. While he is friendly and amiable, his eyes assume a dangerous cast when he is angry, and it becomes obvious that he is not a man to be trifled with. He is quite strong, and his cowboy legacy includes a love of good whiskey. He has been known to wade his considerable musculature into more than one drink-induced fistfight. But those usually end in a helping hand up to the loser, a slap on the back…and more whiskey. ;) |

Family and Background:
|
Jesse grew up in west Texas on Earth, the son of Charles and Ella Graham. Both of his parents still live in El Paso and continue to run the Bar G Ranch, a horse and cattle ranch that has been in existence and run by the Graham clan for over 500 years. It is one of the very few traditional “ranches” still in existence on Earth. Jesse grew up loving every aspect of his traditional life: herding horses and cattle, spending more time than not on horseback, living off the land, and experiencing the grandeur of the great outdoors. While he and his family enjoyed a lot of the everyday conveniences of the 24th century, they held to the essence of the “cowboy way”, which gave Jesse a strong sense of ethics, a strong work ethic, and the grit and determination that he would bring to his career as a Starfleet officer. |

Personal Bio:
|
Jesse Graham was born into one of the oldest living legacies on Earth: the ranch. Jesse grew up learning to live as a cowboy. While other kids played Cowboys, Jesse lived it. He grew up under his father’s watchful eye, learning how to herd cattle and horses, becoming an expert horseman by age 12. He learned to live off the land, and often spent weeks at a time herding stock from one point to another, eschewing modern methods of transport. He learned the true “cowboy way,” including self-reliance, determination, courage, grit and good old-fashioned manners. As he grew, he learned to play as hard as he worked, also like the cowboys of old. He got into his share of trouble, but he also built lasting friendships, learned the value of family, and the rewards of a good honest day’s work.
It was during these formative years that Jesse found his love of the stars. As he would sit beneath the night sky and soak in its grandeur, he fell in love with those stars. He would occasionally see the movements of starships in orbit, and he knew that even though his heritage was grounded in the cowboys and history of Texas, his future was up there, among those beautiful stars. Jesse was fortunate enough to be spared any great personal tragedies or heartache (other than the normal heartache experienced by a young man of any century when it came to fickle young love); his parents and family were all around to foster his growth into a fine young man and to encourage his dreams of one day becoming a Starfleet officer and traveling among his beloved stars.
Jesse grew up, finished high school, went off to college, and eventually reached that most hallowed of milestones: entering Starfleet Academy. He had his share of troubles during this time. His lifestyle was seen as archaic by many of his peers; that, coupled with his legacy of loving good whiskey, led to several fights during his time as a cadet. Fortunately, he scraped by, discipline-wise, and went on to graduate at the top of his class.
Jesse began his career at Deep Space K-7. This was in part due to a particular professor that Jesse butted heads with a lot; he looked down on Jesse and despite Jesse’s considerable academic achievement, or perhaps because of it, the professor felt threatened by Jesse. This professor promised that Jesse would never see the inside of a starship, and he pulled what strings he could to try to make that happen. However, Jesse took to his station-based assignment with enthusiasm, and over the years proved himself to be an able and outstanding officer. He was later reassigned to the starship USS Liberator, where he flourished as he finally got his chance to travel among the stars. He became somewhat seasoned during various combat engagements, including one with a Romulan warbird. He continued to develop as Assistant Chief Ops Officer, and his life and career looked to be soaring brightly. And then tragedy struck in the form of two simple words: the Borg.
The USS Liberator answered the call to arms at the Battle of Wolf 359. As is widely known, this was a horrendous battle with the Borg that took the lives of many Starfleet officers and destroyed many ships. While the Liberator survived, Jesse, along with other crewmembers, was horribly injured. He ended up having extensive cybernetic replacement to his body. The battle changed Jesse, and he still doesn’t know if it was for better or worse. He still wakes up screaming sometimes, as he remembers the sights and sounds of friends dying horribly around him and seeing destruction and carnage all around. He has had the obligatory counseling regimen, and has come to terms with his survival at the cost of so many deaths. But he is still haunted…and always will be.
After his recent reassignment to the USS Discovery, Jesse is hoping that he can make a fresh start, and perhaps put some of the horror behind him. He finds Captain Blair to be a good man and a good captain, and he gets up each morning, occasionally with the help of a bit of his beloved whiskey, hoping that he can simply do his duty as COO to the best of his ability, and that each night maybe there will be one less scream to haunt his nightmares.
