Family and Background:
|
His parents, Mark and Sharon Drake, currently reside in Colorado on Earth. Mark is a university history professor, and Sharon is a civilian attorney.
Silas has an older brother (Matthew) who works as an engineer at Utopia Planet Yards, and a younger sister (Lori) who works as a researcher on Starbase five.
Silas comes from a family with a rich tradition of naval service stretching back hundreds of years, all the way back to the age of sail. Most recently, his grandfather served in Starfleet, where he was killed in action. Silas' father was more scholarly in inclination, and encouraged his children to seek less dangerous careers. As they say, two out of three ain't bad.
Silas actually graduated university with strong marks in engineering, but rather than pursue graduate school, he enrolled in Starfleet Academy instead - much to his parents' dismay. Worse, he avoided the obvious engineering track to instead pursue a tactical path. |

Personal Bio:
|
Silas has a sharp mind and quick wit... and a bit of a temper. Though age has brought wisdom and some increased self control, Silas still has a well deserved reputation for very little suffering of fools.
From the time he first visited a starbase at the age of seven, Silas always knew that we wanted to be - a starship captain. After laying eyes on a sleek starship through the viewport, he fell in love, and no amount of reasoned arguments from his parents would ever change his mind.
Silas has always taken great pride in his family's military history, and likes to believe (though records are incomplete and inconclusive) that he can trace his lineage back to a great sixteenth century sea captain.
His paternal grandfather, Elliot, was a shuttle pilot aboard the USS Argus, and was killed while flying an offplanet evacuation mission. Silas' father Drake always harbored a bit of resentment against Starfleet for his Elliot Drake's death, but Silas has instead viewed it as a noble sacrifice, and yearned to follow in his grandfather's career footsteps.
Later in childhood, Silas learned to keep his views on Starfleet to himself, and when the time came, he enrolled in Colorado University's engineering program, earning a degree with honors. Instead of graduate school, however, Silas enrolled in Starfleet Academy, much to his father's dismay.
Intent on pursuing flight control, Silas instead tested highest in Engineering and Tactics - the latter being his strongest - and pursued a path towards Tactics and Command. Academy went well for him, save a night in the brig for punching a fellow cadet who disparaged his grandfather's name.
His career has largely had an upward trajectory, with a couple of minor derailments - both related to that temper.
The most serious such incident about the Ceres could have ended his career, as Silas - embroiled in a fight - struck a superior officer. Commander Jacobs (the struck officer in question) pushed for an official court martial, but Captain Jemison instead talked it down to an official reprimand for conduct unbecoming, a night in the brig, an anger management course... and months of extra labor details.
It seems that this finally got through to him, and though that temper remains, Silas has since gotten much better at controlling it. Objectively, that temper may be why he does not yet hold the rank of Captain; while he has otherwise been a model officer, quick to learn, inventive, a natural leader... he has also made more than one rash decision, causing certain members of Starfleet Command to view him as something of a loose cannon. The Ceres incident was largely minimized, but nothing like this stays completely secret.
Having recently turned forty, Silas has come to accept that Starfleet will likely be his only marriage partner. With one notable exception, he has failed to make any serious long term relationships work; that one exception ended in the worst possible way.
Upon transfer to the Alexander, Silas soon met and fell in love with an operations officer, Michelle Collins. The two were nigh inseparable, to the point that Silas eventually proposed - and she accepted.
In September of 2356, The Alexander was attacked while both the Captain and XO were both planetside on a diplomatic mission. Silas commanded the ship admirably, repelling the attack and leading a successful rescue of the command staff. However, Michelle - head of damage control aboard the Alexander - was killed by a secondary explosion. Silas was badly burned by that same explosion, but refused skin and tissue regeneration therapy, as he blamed himself for Michelle's death.
A year and a half later, Silas was promoted to Commander, and capably served as the XO of the Alexander for roughly another year and a half, until the captain's chair became vacant on the Peregrine.
While he not personally aware of this, there is a split among the admiralty of what to do with Silas. Some feel, as mentioned above, that he is a loose cannon, unable to be trusted with command of a starship. Others feel differently; one successfully argued to put him in command of a small vessel (where he could theoretically do little harm) that fills the more military roles of patrols, escorts, and the like - where his skills will be of the most use.
Whether or not that trust is deserved remains to be seen.
