Personal Bio:

Background: From the moment she was born, her parents sensed that Marisela Teax was destined for great things. Her gifts were apparent from the moment of her birth, and only grew as she got older. Almost always near the top of her classes, her instructors found her to be quite effective at settling disputes, almost always able to moderate even the most difficult of arguments. She studied at the normal schools, but also at the Academy of Arts, where she showed an aptitude for music.
A tall girl, standing well above most of the girls her own age, she developed her body physically as well as mentally, taking classes considered quite esoteric and even frivolous by her father, such as Terran fencing and even an outside course on the Bat’Leth.
At the age of 18, she applied to and was accepted by Starfleet Academy, much to the chagrin of her parents. Against the wishes of her father, she joined the Academy, applying her formidable will to her classes, passing near the top of most of them. She continued her sword classes as able, and added martial arts and meditation classes to them as well, occasionally sparring with and being bested by (much to her annoyance) her instructor, and included a course in Klingon language.
After graduating, and earning her first commission as ensign, she applied to and was accepted by the Advanced Academy of Psychological studies following her strengths, although she felt she could do well in almost any branch. It was here she met Jerrold Barker, a hardworking, simple man, who worked on most of the mechanical systems at the Academy. He courted her simply, in an almost archaic style, until she finally gave in to his honest simple charm, and married him after two years, at the age of 26. She told her parents, and while her mother was disappointed but understanding, her father refused to speak to her from that point on. She was promoted to Lieuteant at this time, and became a part-time instructor and assistant at the Academy. 2 years later, after her promotion to Lieutenant Commander, her husband was killed by a door malfunction that crushed him. She also received notice from her mother that her father had passed away as well. She became more stoic after that, burying herself in her duties, and her courses, to distract her mind. She counseled in a quiet, almost matriarchal manner, never revealing the pain or anger she felt inside. A year later, A chance to become the counselor on the Hexatrix was offered to her, and she accepted. Perhaps this new endeavor will enable her to move on, and to become more of a person, than just the duty she performs.
Personality Profile: Mari is very much like an ancient martial arts instructor, tending to watch and listen more at the start, and progress to ‘lessons’ as time passes. She is reticent, calm almost to the point of stoicism, even in the face of all but the most obnoxious belligerence, almost Vulcan-like. However, she enjoys martial arts classes, and fences and fights with all but the most advanced of combat of simulations. Sometimes there’s nothing quite like a good fight. She likes to listen to most kinds of music, always on the lookout for something new, which may not even be considered music by many tastes. She also enjoys cooking, a hobby she learned from her late husband.
Special Notes: Mari is deeply wounded by the deaths of her husband and father, and that she never got to say anything to either of them before they passed, but hides it well. She took the offer to serve on the Hexatrix mainly as an attempt to get away from the place where she and her husband had enjoyed their all too brief time together. Her telepathic and empathic skills are high even by Betazoid standards, but she keeps the full extent of her abilities to herself, and whoever she is serving under at the time. She tends to stay on the outside of most conversations after work. If one gets to know her outside of that environment, they will find a quirky sense of humor, a kind heart, and perhaps an aggression not often shown by many Betazoids. |
