Family and Background:

House Veen, is the 13th House of Betazed. The family's founding mother was the 13th acolyte of Krystaros, who like those after her, was not counted as one of the main twelve acolytes. House Veen was the first house to be left outside the council, but it was still very rich and revered amongst the Betazoid.
House Veen's estates were not located in the capital of Betazed, but rather on the opposite side of the same continent Kharazad in the city of Garah. House Veen owned multiple agricultural enterprises, including two most prominent wine houses on the planet.
Amris's mother Anara is the younger sister of the matriarch of the house Riarin. At 85, she is planning to retire from official work as the head physician of the Garah University Hospital within the next five to ten years. In the next 40 or 50 years, she is assumed to become the next matriarch.
General Macrah Veen of the Betazed Defence Forces or BDF has not even considered retirement at 73. He considers himself to be in his prime and to have another 12-15 years of work life ahead of him. Aran hasn't seen his father very much in his childhood as the headquarters of the BDF are located in the capital. And as a diplomat, General Veen has during the last four decades spent at least as much time off-world than he has on it.
The Betazedian army, it's defence forces have not seen much action lately... or ever. The planet's peaceful inhabitants and their telepathic powers have ensured life of peace and quiet practically always. And yet, ever since the first FTL flight, the Council has recognised the need for an army; a well trained military that is ready to defend and protect the home world.
Therefore it was quiet natural for young Amris at 20 years of age to follow his father's footsteps into the army. He was not quite as ambitious as his father and he hated the idea of training how to kill, but fairly weak minded as a boy, he was a afraid to say no to his father and applied to the BDF once his general education was done. Being the son of a young general and more importantly a member of the 13th house, Amris was accepted without qualification and despite of the limp he had.
