Physical Description:

Rena is a woman with a fairly slender build, and long black hair. She is good looking, but not so much to attract attention. She is very much a person who one wouldn't look twice at, unless they happened to see her eyes or were intrigued by her other unique features. Mismatched eye colouring is one of her most distinct features, with a violet right eye, and a blue-green left eye, and she also has a jagged scar on her right cheek. However, her unique visor could arguably be the most distinctive feature she has. It's joined to her head at the place where her right ear would be, and goes over her left ear, although it appears to have an attachment point there as well. The front part of the visor goes over her forehead, so works as a hairband as well. There is a part that goes around the back of her head, but this is more of a counterbalance to offset the slight weight of the front portion. The actual visor extends downward from the forehead piece, and extends as an opaque, pointed piece to cover her nose as well, when viewed from the front. At the centre of this piece is a wide lens, almost like an archaic camera. Most of the time, the visor is not extended, however, the visor itself easily gives her the illusion of being an android. She often wears her uniform, coupled with a pair of long gloves, and 3' semiformal high heels. Yet, for all her formality, she doesn't come across as being a very formal person, and has a simple, reserved air about her.

Medical History:
|
"2351, at age 21, Lt. Leiran was subjected to an FAE while conducting a routine practise lab. The explosion and resulting collateral damage was sufficient to cause the loss of her right eye, ear and arm, as well as warrant the amputation of both her legs at the knee. Prosthetic limbs and a cybernetic eye have been provided."
Minor entry:
"2363, at age 33, Lt. Leiran underwent surgery to provide the anchor points for a visor of her design."

Personal Bio:
|
Being born into a more academic family, it was no surprise that Rena and her sister, Yuki, would develop talent in mechanics, as well as life sciences and medicine. The two of them were inseparable twins, and indeed, it seemed like they were the only ones who could tell themselves apart. They were both left handed, and sometimes they even finished each other's sentences or spoke in unison, although this was usually done to their amusement at the looks they'd receive. They took the same courses, and even in school if they ended up in different classes, they'd together beseech the counsellors to give them the exact same timetable. It seemed like they were both training to become skilled mechanics, under the tutelage of their father, and perhaps they would've even started their own company together.
However, that all changed in university. Mechanics is not without its hazards, and one day, a simple mistake resulted in a disastrous FAE - a fuel-air-explosion. Their father recognized the danger, and tried to block it with his own body, but only succeeded in helping to shield Rena. As a result of the explosion, Rena lost many things, her right arm, father and twin sister being the most notable. Prosthetics could replace her missing body parts, but nothing could fill the void made from two integral people disappearing. She stopped going to school, and fell into depression for a while.
Eventually, Rena found a new resolution and objective. Although the prosthetics she had were sufficient, they were no replacement for biological parts, so her new objective was to uncover the science behind the synthesis of living cells, and thus the creation of biological prosthetics. In her mind, it's what she and Yuki would've done had she survived the explosion, and so that's what she was going to do.
Rena returned to school under a new directive, and this time had a bit of help from her mother who, being a doctor, was no stranger to life sciences. It eventually became clear that this level of research required more than just textbook experience, so Rena enlisted into the Starfleet. Several years later, she would find herself as a full Lieutenant, and the Chief Science Officer of the USS Discovery...
