Rachel's dream has always been to see the stars up close. Originally, her plan was to apply to the Academy, but she narrowly failed the pre entrance screening exam. Refusing to abandon her dream, she instead enlisted.
Excellent reflexes and steady nerves gained her a pilot rating in short order, a job that she has filled admirably for her entire career. An accident in her second year nearly took her life and caused her to strongly consider leaving Starfleet, but she could not bring herself to settle for a "dry feet" lifestyle.
Rachel endured pain of a different sort in 2364, when a bad relationship led to a broken heart and a miscarriage. Since then, she has buried herself in her work. She still dates, but refuses to entertain the idea of anything more serious.
In 2366, she has took up intense study of astrogation and related topics, and is currently toying with the idea of entering OCS. Aboard the Chimera, Rachel was encouraged to begin training as a helmsman. She has now satisfied the prerequisites, and is on the cusp of being qualified to pilot a starship.
Of course, one obstacle remains - her rank. Enlisteds are not permitted on the bridge, so Rachel needs to be accepted for officer training.
