Just a new...well, newbie...

So I found RDI while I was browsing through some sites on D&D. I've never played before, but I'm a quick study, and I've been reading through some of the 4th ed stuff, and it sounds like a blast. I've been more of a computer RPer over the years (A little WoW, a little Diablo, Neverwinter Nights, Oblivion, so on, so on), but I've always wanted to give D&D a try. See you guys out there!

Excellent

Welcome the Inn, I'm sure you'll find D&D to your liking considering your other endevours so far. You might be a bit pressed to find a 4e game though, as it's slightly unpopular on the board at the moment, though more people fond of it have been trickling in.

Indeed

Welcome, oh thee new one.

Indeed, the 4th edition has been a bit unpopular since it was published, specially amongst the more experienced players, but that hasn't stopped several Inn-mates from trying to get a game going.

I hope you enjoy your time here and find a game of your liking

Come to think of it

I may have to dig around among some of my old RPGing friends and try to get a copy of the 3.5 rules. That or scour amazon. Whatever, I'm game, just like trying new things, doncha know.

Ohoho

I do know indeed. I've been trying to get other games than D&D into these threads for some time, such as World of Darkness, but I haven't had much luck with it.

Trying new things is great. Good luck with that

Hello, Welcome, Yeah Another D&D recruit.

#.5 adn 2.0 are the most popular D&D games going here. There are plenty of active games. To acquaint yourself you might read some of them and get a feeling for the role playing in a message board. Read sime if the D&D Rules-based games threads found under the Interactive tab>Dragon Forum>Rules-based> D&D. If like what is going on of and check with DMs for openings. I do know there is a Samurai already available in Trilogy war D&D 2.0. DOn't let what edition it might be scare you off, The rules are not as important for players as the role playing ability. The rules can be learned. and character playing can be developed.

Most of the D&D books can be found online in PDF format. With some hunting about for free. THen you can have them all on you PC

If you are interested in sties where they are available PM me.

pssh

Don't listen to these guys dis 4e. It's just not very forum-friendly due to the more wargaming feel to it.

But there are plenty of 2e, 3.5e, and Star Wars games going on, plus plenty of others.

You might want to also consider jumping into a free-form game to get used to forum-style gaming.

Welcome to the Inn!

They're out there...

I may have to dig around among some of my old RPGing friends and try to get a copy of the 3.5 rules. That or scour amazon. Whatever, I'm game, just like trying new things, doncha know.
Since discovering this site, and getting re-motivated to play, I've dug up my 3.0 books, downloaded the 3.5 versions in pdf format (scridb.com has some for free, paizo.com sells the pdf files for $5 each), and ordered used copies of all the 2.0 books off of amazon, including all of the Complete Book of Whatevers and the Complete Whatevers Handbook.

Edit: I also bought the 4.0 books or rather the 1st volume of them. Its more than a little cheesy for them to divide the basic books into multiple volumes each.

I still like 2.0 the best, probably because I'm old, and spent a lot of my younger days playing it.

The 4th edition seems to me like marketing scheme to sell miniatures, dungeon tiles and (if they're not out there yet, I'm sure they're coming) decks of spell/exploits/actions/powers.

2e

2e is still the superior system for online gaming, IMHO. I grew up playing 2e in middle school and picked up 3e in High School.

But 4e has a different overall feel to it that you can't quite fully appreciate without a group of friends sitting around a table with a battle map. It plays more like a wargame than past editions, but still has out of battle mechanics (and areas for straight RP-improv) to give that classic D&D feel.

Thanks!

I'll work on doing some research on 2e. I've freeformed quite a bit before, actually, and kinda liked it. I may give that a go too!

Yay!

New blood! Welcome to the Inn, by far the best place out there to spend your evenings. As said before, do lurk around the games -read on and apply to open positions. We are friendly and happy people and always welcome to accept newcomers into our midst.

Don't worry too much about the rules, the games here are more about playing and having fun. Let the DM handle the boring part. Of course it's good to know the mechanics, but it's certainly not a requirement. And as also was mentioned, we have free-form games, which usually do not rely on rules at all, or at most very little.

sweet

Welcome, noob! And yeah, I may personally bash 4e... but I'm a codger that still plays by 2e rules, circa 1989 or so, so feel free to ignore me on that front.

Welcome to the Inn!
