Mingan Sibling Rivalry Q&A
Character build parameters
Location and Race: Because we are at a draw for topside and the Underdark, and because I want to start writing soon, I have decided that the surface version of my story is the way to go. Surface side there is a wide variety of races (including drow) that can be used. Any race that is found in the forgotten realms and can plausibly be found in the starting NPC’s household is open and available. Just remember that in-world prejudices will be taken into account.
Starting Level: Everyone will start out with an ECL 3. (I.e. as a drow you begin at level one because of the character level adjustment.)
Ability Scores: I am using the point buy as outlined on page 169 in the DMG. You all have 50 points to spend. However you are only allowed one 18 in your base score (before modifiers).
Money: The amount you start with will depend on the class you start with. Please PM me once your class is chosen and I will respond with how much your character has to start purchasing personal items with. I will not put any restraints on how much money you can spend on one item just remember this is an evil game so putting all your eggs in one basket, so to speak, could be dangerous to your health. You might break out in a bad case of death sooner then you anticipated.
Books: To start out the PHB, PHB II, DMG, & DMG II are open, also the player’s guide to Faerun if you have it at your disposal. Because this is an evil game you may use feats from BofVD but please let me know in advance what you have chosen to use. As you level I will open up more of the book for you to use however for starting out I will not let you raid the whole candy store.
At each level that you gain a feat I will let you choose another book for your character to open up. Yes that means that a fighter will have the option in the long run to have more books available to them than say a barbarian. If you are able to start a prestige class on a level that you don’t gain a feat please let me know what it is you plan to do and I will let you open the requisite book to begin your prestige class. However if you gain a feat at the same level that you can begin a prestige class I will not let you open two books.
If a class that you wish to start out with is not in the starting 5 books that are open you may use 5 points from your ability score point buy in order to open the requisite book you will need for a different class.
Beginnings of a plot hook: You have all been commissioned by the head of a certain noble household to do a job. How and why your individual characters are in that room at that time is up to you to build into your back story. My opening post will give you a good idea what kind of man you are involved with. If you have additional questions please feel free to PM them to me. Also I would like to keep your back stories just between you and me for starters, unless you choose to have your character be someone that is known for their treachery. In which case what is known is more rumor and hearsay then truth. What I want to know is the truth behind the rumors, and I will be sure to post the rumors for all to be familiar with.
I will try to be sure to communicate with you regularly if I want to use part of your back story to help with plot hooks, embellishments, and added difficulty level. But I am human and will make mistakes from time to time. I love collaborating and feel that together we can have the best outcome.
A standard for us all to play by: If I have done something to upset you or that you simply cannot understand then PM me first before airing your grievances with me publicly. I will respect you in the same way. Otherwise feel free to use the Q&A thread for clarification and questions as it is intended. Even though I am running an evil campaign I am not the kind of DM that wants to screw over their players. IRL I try to be a fair and thoughtful person, just do not expect my NPC’s to agree with me.
Please feel free to ask if you think I have forgotten something that you need to know for character creation, or if I haven’t been clear enough on a point. I will be happy to clarify.

Hmm
So uh, what's everyone thinking of playing? I was toying with the idea of some sort of blitzkrieg killing machine Barbarian/Fighter with some prestige class flair, what about the rest of you, don't want to end up 5 fighters then run into a single caster and implode .

Races common to the region
In case you don't have the time to dig through all the books to find this out I figured I will post most common races found in Chessenta(the part of the world your characters will all be living and working for this time in your life)
Humans Mulan,Turami
Half-orc
Mountain orc
Planetouched Aasimar, Water genasi
Neighboring regions are also home to:
Humans Mulan,Turami,Calish'ite,Shaaran
Gold Dwarf
Wild Elf
Ghostwise halfling
Planetouched Aasimar, Fire genasi, Earth genasi & Tiefling
This doesn't mean that you must choose from these races but these are the most commonly found in this region and surrounding it so you should be able to get a good idea as to what kinds of prejudices are found amongst the people of Chessenta

Info on the region
The country of Chessenta is part of what Faerun calls the old empires. The people of Chessenta are passionate, living each day to the fullest. Seen by outsiders as a drunken and riotous people, the Chessentans feast and fight often, not doing anything halfway. Their athletic competitions are popular events, particularly wrestling, and almost every citizen has some skill in fighting.
Most of the rulers in Chessenta are retired soldiers, and the title of War Hero is one of the greatest honors a person can receive, with any particular battle rarely finding more than one person worthy of such a title. This dedication to war suits the Chessentans well, for their nation has prospered through the conflicts between their rival cities.
Chessentans practice slavery, although it is less widespread than in Unther and Mulhorand. Unlike in those countries, a slave-owner can grant a slave freedom at any time, often for exceptional work. Slaves are kept illiterate, except those in the city of Cinbar. Chessenta’s sizable middle class controls the country’s money. The government encourages prosperity for all, so tax revenues remain high.

To answer the Grugg...
I was thinking of making a rogue/sorcerer. Be a very charismatic person, who also has stealth and pretty destructive power.
EDIT: On second thought, I'm gonna play a straight rogue. Magic isn't evil enough.

The story so far
Koen Mingan was an old War Hero that was the ruler of a city in the south of Chessenta, Tastir, a city small in population yet large in acreage. The shores of the Akanamere could be seen off to the north and the hills of Maerthwatch to the south. He took hold of the title of town ruler long ago when the struggling village was repeatedly caught in the middle of the feuding cities Dernly to the north east and Olbearn to the west. There was no guard to protect the locals from being forced to give housing to both troops as they used Tastir as a stopover on their way to invade one another.
Koen wanted to find a place to retire from his life of warring and soldiery. Not wanting to give up the excitement of that life entirely he felt that Tastir seemed the perfect place for his battalion to settle in. The people welcomed the support and even sent all their able young men and women to train and become part of the new city guard. In exchange for the boosted protection the new occupants of Tastir were taught the ways of tending the vineyards and olive groves that covered much of the northwest and south eastern parts of the town. Soon there were many marriages and a population surge. The next time Dernly sent a troop of mercenaries to infiltrate Olbearn they were given two options as they reached the edge of Tastir. Either continue on their way and not stop, or pay for room and board just like any adventurer would be expected to do. Not wanting to fail at their job they were commissioned to do, they grudgingly paid the money for room and board at a painfully high price.
Using the money they paid Koen purchased materials to build a garrison, training arena and an inn. Hoping that the inn would generate enough income to also pay for a stable and eventually a nice estate for him near the great vineyard, where he wanted to start a family.
Moiré, a feisty young woman that joined the original new city guard was the first born of the family that owned the vineyard. She learned quickly and was full of a competitive nature that earned her a reputation for taking beatings as well as she gave them. After she bested Koen’s captain in a sparring match Koen approached her father for permission to take his daughter’s hand in marriage. The aged man was delighted that a known War Hero wanted to ally himself with his household. Merdock, Moiré’s father agreed to the match. Once her time in training was completed Moiré and Koen were officially married and she became the head of the Mingan household. She was the one that oversaw the selection of their personal guard, purchase of slaves, and food for the monthly feasts that became a tradition the whole city looked forward to. While Koen oversaw the growing city guard and was the mediator for disputes between land and slave owners.
Moiré bore him three sons, and then after giving birth to the last developed a bed sickness that took her ability to walk. However her tenacious personality would not let the sickness take her life before she was able to see her youngest compete in his first wrestling match. He was only six years old next to his opponents eight and after a painfully long beating, which everyone was sure he wouldn’t be able to hold up under, he won. It was a decidedly well thought out move that left everyone speechless, including his opponent. That night at the feast she laughed and dined with her men for the last time. As Koen carried her to their room in his arms, she kissed him gently on the cheek, and then breathed her last. Many say that from that day on Koen slowly began to lose his mind.
Koen’s sons Korbin, Banyan, and Mordechai all grew up learning the ways of a warrior. They each spent their time as part of the city guard but as they grew older and their father became surly and unreasonable they began to stretch out and try to get away from him. Koen sensed this and tried desperately to keep his family together. Korbin and Banyan most of all felt beaten and betrayed by their father and his overwhelming demands. But Mordechai possessing his mother’s determination stuck by his father and for it received more kindness than the other brothers felt they had received from him in all their lives combined.
Korbin escaped through a convenient marriage, or so he thought. He moved to the far side of the city and built his own inn as the booming economy seemed to need more than just one anymore. His shrill wife bore him three children before dying in childbirth with the forth. The infant followed its mother less than a day later.
Being so close to the lake Korbin saw more seafaring merchants then his father’s inn, making enough money that he never needed to work the inn himself. Instead he spent time in the town making connections and preparing himself for one day taking his father’s seat as a diplomat. He left his children to tend the inn, and the slaves that helped with up keep. His first born was a frail girl, Kristen nearly old enough to wed but never able to handle the life of a fighter. The second and third were boys Kory age twelve and Kole age eight.
Banyan on the other hand never wanted to marry. As a child he thought he did not want to be subject to the grief that his father was plagued with when his mother died. But as he grew so did his loathing for matrimony. As a celebrated fighter at his father’s feasts he had many women that wished to share his bed and far be it from him to have to deny any of them. On top of that he found that he had no patience for children and their inquisitive nature. He developed a widely known reputation for a man that did not hesitate to beat a child for crossing him.
As Banyan reached the age most men would be heading off to war, his ambition had him plotting to start them. He had grown tired of being caught in the middle of the local feuds of the two closest cities, so he took it upon himself to attack them and end it. The victory over Olbearn was credited to his father the War Hero. And an alliance was formed between Tastir and Dernly. That was credited to his older brother who helped lead the raid on Dernly while Banyan was taking the troops west to Olbearn, leaving him with no recognition or title to speak of. The feuding was at an end but a much deeper seeded battle was just beginning in Banyan's soul. He hated children, loved too many women, and craved power for himself for it seemed to be the one thing consistently denied him.
The men of Mingan household gathered together for a great feast at the end of summer. Their father had an announcement that held the potential to change all their lives. As the main course of the feast was being brought in Koen had his slaves be sure that every guest held in their hand a full cup of wine for a toast. The scared aged War Hero stood and the whole assembly murmured then fell silent. His three boys were all seated to his right and one at a time he asked them each to stand.
“Korbin rise… before all here that witness it, please prove that you love me best.”
Korbin stood there for a moment wondering what ranting this could be all about. Unwilling to hurt his reputation within the community and desiring to gain the power that his fading father wielded he straightened up took a deep breath, and in a loud and commanding voice.
“I have loved him from the very start, I desired in all ways to follow my father’s footsteps because he is the man I most admire. He is a great ruler and a man of amazing heroism and unmatched creativity. And in the loss of my own dear wife I understand his pain and grief even more than I could have hoped as a child when my own mother passed.”
Korbin droned on like this for almost an hour. Banyan fell asleep on the table after drinking his whole glass of wine in one gulp. Mordechai was simply astonished at his eldest brother’s shamelessness, the way he exploited his dead wife and now motherless children. Korbin even tried to exploit his own mother and Mordechai’s unfortunate beginnings. It was sickening and yet one look at his father and Mordechai knew that he was falling for it hook, line, and sinker. His heart sank at the tears in the old man’s clouded eyes. As his first born finished he stood again.
“Thank you my son, let us all drink to Korbin’s loyalty. My son!” The crowd cheered and took great big gulps of their glasses, many quickly grabbed for the now cooling food. “… and now Banyan, stand for it is your turn to show me your love and loyalty.”
At this the people settled down. Some slowly munching on what they had managed to slip on to their plate in that brief moment. They new Banyan to be a man of few words so it wouldn’t be much longer now.
“I admire this man more than my eldest brother could ever hope to achieve; I have worked hard to become the same kind of warrior that my father once was, the kind of man that earned him the title of War Hero, the same kind of man that arrived here twenty five years ago and made this city what it is today. I do not pine away or prey on the misfortune of my family to prove my loyalty. I prove it by my sword.” His speech was short but given much like a commander inspiring his troops, and everyone seemed taken away by it. They cheered much louder merely because it was a much shorter speech then the first. There was a gleam in Koen’s eye that showed he was pleased and even excited at what was to come.
“Stand now Mordechai…prove your love and loyalty.”
This was exactly what the young man feared. He loved his father more than anything and would give his life for him in an instant but this display of his brothers sickened him. He could not bring himself to grovel. His mother taught him to be proud and strong. Even his father taught him that your deeds speak louder than words and that you owe no man an explanation, for your actions will always speak louder. Mordechai knew that his father was getting old and senile but he could not bring himself to destroy everything he had been taught.
Slowly he stood and looked out with determination at the crowd waiting for this display to be at an end.
“I have nothing to say.”
There was a gasp in the crowd as his father stood in a slow burning rage. His voice scary and low at first grew to the brink of a berserker's rage.
“Ungrateful wretch, out of my sight! You of all your brothers should know better than to cross me. Leave this city and never return. I will give the city guards freedom to tear you limb from limb if I see you even within a mile of the city limits. Go, you are no son of mine!”
Mordechai took one last dry eyed look at his father then left the table. He stopped at his room on the way out of the house only to grab his leather practice armor and sword. Instead of leaving through the front gate he detoured to the stable and took his buckskin from the stall and rode out of town without looking back.
After his youngest son left the table Koen took a moment to regain his composure as everyone watched him in dumbfounded silence. That day marked the end of peace for the Mingan family as well as the town of Tastir. That night Koen died in his sleep.
We move forward now one year. Banyan is living in Olbearn as a kind of dictator while Korbin has moved into his father’s house with his three children and new mistress. Banyan is furious with his current state of affairs. He was kicked out of his father’s house by his own brother and asked to leave the city he had called home his whole life. He took a small attachment of men he knew to be loyal to him, men that had adventured with him and shared his insatiable lust for power. They moved into the home of the former ruler taking control of all his assets, and the city guard. They spent the year plotting and planning how to take back what Banyan felt was stolen from him. But it had to be done subtly for they did not have the resources to take on Tastir and Dernly forces together.
One fateful day Banyan had an idea for how to begin taking back what was his. He summoned the most talented and ruthless men that he knew to meet him in his war room. For the plan he had would strike at his brother’s selfish and tiny heart. A tactic that Banyan found worked well in manipulating small week minded men. The very prospect of being able to try this particular tactic out on his own flesh and blood put a smile on his face and a spring in his step. As the summoned men enter the room they find Banyan sitting in his chair looking very pleased with himself.
(Part of your back story needs to include why Banyan chose you for this elite forces task. You are welcome to use info I have given you however there is plenty of room to add in your own ideas. Please PM them to me by next weekend. I'll be out of town 9th-12th so when I get back everyone should be ready to receive their first mission.)

Sorry I took so long. I is here! I haven't had much experience with Faerun, but I've been reading up, and I'll probably be ready around when we start.

Likewise...
I also have little/no experience with the Faerun setting. However, I'm willing to do the game, purely because it's evil.
Speaking of which, I've finished my character. He's shaping up quite nicely. I'm in the process of finishing his story... then he will be ready.

Yay!
Well, my character is ready, and, if it's still approved by Savrit, it'll be a de-buffer, minion master, secondary spell caster type of my own invention (The witch doctor).
