2nd Edition AD&D Houserules

I was just curious what some of the 2nd edition AD&D house rules that you all used were.

My old group had a few house rules.

One was that levels beyond 10 still awarded additional hit dice instead of set hit points. I know it doesn't make for a very realistic game, but our group was small so in order to do anything semi-epic we needed all the help we could get (besides its supposed to be fantasy and heroic).

Another of our house rules concerned overcasting. We enabled spell casters to cast spells beyond their daily limit at a cost to their health. For every 2 hit points they willingly gave up they could cast 1 spell level. (I.e. a 5th level caster giving up 6 hit points could cast another 3rd level spell). The limit to this was that they could only do this a number of times per day equal to their magical defense bonus. (So the same wizard above with a 15 wisdom could only overcast 1 time per day.)

Just curious, what were some of your house rules?

hmmm

I use the "Tides of Magic" rules (see the Audalis section of the site for details). I do not require wizards to prepare specific spells - as long as they spend the needed amount of time studying, they can cast any spell of appropriate level.

There are lots of others that I use, but this gets the conversation going.

just kinda throwing this out

its kinda weird (as in it cranks your characters out real quick) but the one ive played by for a while was add 2hp every hit so i got some characters that can take 2-3 ancient red dragons on by themself. but then again it always gets intersting when you run into small armys on solo adventures.

House Ruling

A lot of the house-ruling we used in 2nd edition sort of became standard in 3rd. For instance, we did away with the saving throws as written and instead tied them to appropriate stats. It made a lot more sense to us that way, and it seems that WotC agreed later (though we had nothing to do with that, obviously).

In general, we just house ruled as we saw fit to make things run smoother and faster. Anything that kept us playing instead of arguing about rules was a good thing.
