How Did You First Find Red Dragon Inn?

Hello, All!

In reading many different threads across the different Forum categories, I've noticed that Innmates leave clues as to how they found their way here to RDI. The Web is a vast expanse of digital territory, and as much as we love rdinn.net, it is but one of *Carl Sagan's voice* billions and billions of sites in the "digiverse." So, how about it? One place to share all our stories of blind stumbling exploration, numerous browser searches, or perhaps a friend grabbed your hand and flung you through the front door--how did you get here?

When I got this laptop, the first computer of my own, and arranged Internet service, I headed straight for Google and started searching anything related to D&D. Being frugal, I was keen on any free information to download, and hit AD&D Downloads. After scarfing a few free adventures, I was hungry for more, so I clicked the link to RPG Life and lurked a bit. I liked what I saw there and read many posts and after a time, became interested in the rdinn.net link, clicked it, and found a much cozier site, one that I felt would be more gentle and welcoming than other forum sites. Boy, was it ever! This site alone makes my Internet bill worth it.

The earlier days

I found the inn in the earlier days of the internet. It was when we had a new dial-up connection at my parents' house, and I was looking around on the net for websites that would concern D&D. I found a few that were nice, and eventually stumbled upon Effie Rover's portal. There I found a link to the inn.

I looked around a bit, but with dial-up things go sloooooowwwww, and it was relatively expensive to be online for a longer time. Plus, nobody in the house could make phone calls while the internet was on. So I didn't stay on long, but long enough to see there was a chat option.

I didn't return until cable internet was affordable. I again went looking for dnd sites, when I remembered that chat function. I was dying to talk to players from around the world to hear and learn from their experiences. So, I returned to the inn.

...and became a regular in chat, but didn't join games. Back then, you didn't have to have a username to join chat, which made it very accessible to DnD-ers (but also to spammers and teenage japanese chatters who didn't know D from D). Then I made a username and joined my first (free form) game.

Comics lead the way.

I had been told about OOTS as a funny D&D web comic. I got hooked and read them all, then read all of the Erfworld comic on the same site. I still wanted more so I started surfing for D&D Web comics and found Loaded Dice. After I had read all of those I set it up as faverate so I could keep checking for new releases. It was the the waiting that got me to browes the LD site which was RDI. I setup a name just intending to lurk, then came the greeting from Eol, the Facelick and I found out he was a fellow Buckeye. I was hooked and started to check the Posting Games. Enter Pit F(r)iend. I really liked Pit's sense of humor and started verbal sparing in games, one upsmanship and all. Well in no time I'm a regular, dropping in during breaks and lunch and checking the games at night. I just sort of slipped in as the substitute Bartender of the DragonChat Bar, a chance to just be a goof.

Thank you all for being such great folks.

Heh... the facelick is the glue that binds us all together...

How'd I get here?

You guys brought me, of course... *leans in and whispers* Y'see, I'm just a figment of your imagination. Started out as a funky green toadstool with pinkspots, don'cha know? Then, some random Innmate decides that the mushroom's a hat and some whack-a-doo elf lives under it... One thing leads to another, see, and one day - POOF - there's Eol! *nods*

Not buyin' that, are ya?

No... I didn't think so...

Like many of the rest of you, I googled my way here, more or less. Sitting at home one night, after I'd finished the rest of the internet, I did a search (been so long ago I can't recall exactly what for, though) and a click or two later, here I was, lurking and lurking... then I joined up and lurked for a little longer before tossing in a post here and there... then I got into a freeform game... then I got into other games... then I moved in...

Psssh! I like the first version better... let's go with that!

dark

Sometimes I feel like I've always been here, alone in the dark for a long time until Olan turned on the lights.

D&D Books

I came to the Inn while looking for D&D eBooks and stuff about a campaign. I can't remember totally, but I saw this link while on a page and clicked it. I didn't subscribe at the time , but then one day I decided to return and register.

I've been here every day since!

heh

As I recall, Alacrity joined after sending in an email to our gaming advice column of the time. We gave him validation that it's okay to continue being a kid on into your dotage.

I was playing Star Wars Combine, the eternally ranked #1 site on rpggateway and was getting tired of it. Figured I'd check out some of the other top sites listed there and the Inn, at the time, was like 5 or 6 or something like that. definitely had a promising description and it was rated just below those sites that never actually move from the top of the ranking, which in my mind put it in the top spot.

Hooked immediately.

Lurked for a bit, tried some posting games, and got into a 3.5 game on my first try. Sheer dumb luck conspired to keep me here and it's plan has worked well.

I blame...

I guess you could blame both DragoDorn and Questionable Content for my new arrival to here. It's been fun so far.

Im positive there was another thread with an identical question, but it appears to have disappeared. Also I can't remember...something about goofing off in elementary school computer class. Returner will remember for me, if he shows up.

whoop

Olan posted on Deviant art that he was looking for a new Loaded Dice artist, and I figured I would apply. Funny thing is, there were other artists interested that were about 100x better then me, but some how I ended up drawing the comic. lol

Figured that if I was going to be here anyways I might as well make an account... =P

Wotc -> Rdinn.

I used to use the town generator on rdinn before I was even a member. My main site at the time was Wizards.com where I use to role play in the chat rooms using dice bots.

But when Wizards of the Coast went all "fun house" mirror on me and closed down the chat rooms, I began my search for my new RPG home. A year and many sites explored later, I found this place again (was actually looking for a chatroom to RP in, but little did I know at the time, most people PBP)!

Search Engine

Four years ago, a year before my gaming group to a sudden stop, I was [still am] a DM for merely 15 years...I had always dedicated my time. Outside of work of course, to always improving my skills, in spite of being told I did not need to, out of that and sorry to say boredom, I Searched for three things in three different Browser Windows. One, AD&D, two Town Generator, Three Spell Sheets. RDINN was given to me in all three windows, I don't believe in coincidence so I went in and joined without thinking, why? Have you seen this site?

I joined because of the amount assistance this site gives to both DM and Player, not only for D&D, but for a few other games as well. Four years later, I joined the Forum, to get my Forum Addiction fix...yes I am addicted to Forums, but this is the only Forum I am staying with, owning four Forum, being Admin for six, and Moderator for eight takes a toll. So I am happy just being me sometimes, since I am already a DM.
