I had to watch it twice...
...it was that good. I even debated staying awake through the second encore but decided that some sleep before starting another work week would be a good idea.
If you've read the comic, you will not be disappointed - you may even be pleasantly surprised, now that I think about it - if you haven't read the comics... well... now you've got a choice, it seems... watch on AMC or pick up the trades at your local comic shop and get to flippin'... I recommend doing both. *nodnodnods*

Oh, you should be...
...it was fantastic!
I'll hold off on saying much more until you get a chance to see it for yourself... The zombie "makeup" was first class... the story, thus far, has stayed so remarkably close to the comics that I was truly impressed but, what impressed me all the more, was how some bits and pieces of the story (as presented in the corresponding issues of the comic) were actually expanded on to a certain degree and, IMO, made for a much more enjoyable and engrossing experience... Can't wait for the next episode...

Sweet...
Been wondering how far they would go with the comic book plot. Some of things Kirkman has done have been hardcore, so I'm interested to see if AMC is actually brave enough to go there.

Well...
...the language is a bit tamer - I don't think I've heard the "s" word or the "f" bomb, yet - but it's not completely "sanitized" either. The gore is gory enough without looking as if the gore is the point of the show. There are a few scenes that have been mildly tweaked as compared to the comics but nothing enough to make one go "Oh, they derailed it right there..." and besides, the expansion that they did with some of the other bits was a great surprise and gave back anything that the "tweaked scenes" might have taken away.
"...Yeah... you in the tank.... Cozy in there?"

*Headslap!*
Crud, I forgot one of our biggest resident Zombie fans doesn't have cable--guess we'll have to bite our tongues (better us than the Zombos, right?) when it comes to spoilers. Hulu will have it online soon, I'm sure. . .
The gore and special FX are right on the edge of what basic cable will allow, I think, and serve quite well. Eol, I've actually heard the "s" word several times in the premiere, but for some reason the Closed Captioning censors it.
Great idea on reading the TPB, Eol--I'm editing my Christmas list as we speak. It's been ages since I read a comic.
That one scene in the tank when Rick fires his gun and is dramatically deafened by it was spot-on. Colt Python .357's make enough noise out in the open!

You haven't read the comics?
*blinkblinkblink* Somehow, Pit, I find that hard to believe... huh...
Disbelief aside, I do recommend giving them a read when you get a chance... especially now that you've started watching the series... you'll definitely have an appreciation of how true the series seems to be keeping to the comic while, at the same time, garnering an even deeper appreciation for how the story's been 'fleshed out' for the screen as opposed to how it is in the print version.
The tank scene, for instance... didn't happen in the comics... there was a tank there, yeah, but Rick never went inside... One of those moments (but not the first one) that made me go; "What? Wait... that's not... Ooooooh... very cool..."
Gah! Now I wanna watch it again...

Cable?
Who needs cable... I've got the internet and a husband who loves me very much.
Got to watch it last night after child birth class.
Fantastic indeed.
And I was pleased that they started the show in the encampment by the gas station, even though that scene wasn't in the comic it certainly squashed any thoughts that they were going to tame down the story line much. Obviously yes the language has been tamed some, but not too much really, but that's fine with me as long as the plot still works out.
How many comics are there anyway? I've made my way through the first 8... but there are least 12 aren't there?
And yeah... I asked that lovely husband of mine for the hardbound version of the first collection for Christmas.

Issues...
...There are currently 13 volumes of the trade paperbacks, I think (each TPB covers 6 monthly issues of the comic, I think)...
Oh, and the hardcovers that Meri wants for Christmas cover 12 issues a piece, I believe.... There are six of those in print atm, if I'm not mistaken...

hehe
Just went to look these up on Amazon (yes I'm avoiding doing actual work right now).
Here is the product description:
'This hardcover features the first 12 issues of the hit series along with the covers for the issues in one oversized hardcover volume. Perfect for long time fans, new readers and anyone needing a slightly heavy object with which to fend off the walking dead.'
+1 Applaud for Amazon

Lots of reading indeed...
...this series started in 2003 and is still running to this very day, so, yeah... polish up those eyeballs.
I misspoke in my earlier post, too... the 13th TPB isn't out just yet... hits stands on the 17th of this month, though.

Thoughts on casting thus far
I hope we see more of Lennie James ("Morgan") in the show. He's simply too good an actor to have as a one-off. Nice to see from the previews that Michael Rooker will make at least one appearance this season. Now if they can get John Diehl (my favorite living character actor) that'll be a coup. Let's not forget Jeffrey DeMunn, who made a brief appearance in the pilot (he was the older gentleman in the group of survivors outside Atlanta).
If only Dick Miller was alive to take part in this. . .
(ps Back when I did read comics regularly, I had an uncanny knack for subscribing to those titles that would get discontinued after a year or less. So in hindsight never having read the comic series was probably a good thing.)

Casting
IMO, the casting for this has been pretty much "spot on". Great choices for the roles, so far, by casting for sure.
I don't want to give too much away, here, but Morgan - if he shows up again, at all - won't be making an appearance again for quite some time... Jeffrey DeMunn (Dale), on the other hand, will be pretty much a fixture for a good while. Dale owns the RV you saw in the survivors camp in the pilot and let's just say the RV plays a pretty big part in the story at least for a little while.
Is it Sunday, yet?
