The Scarred Continents, Game Ready and Recruitment Open

Firstly, I would like to apologize to everyone, seeing as I am essentially running two recruiting topics for one game. If anyone asks, however, I will later move all of the other thread into a Q&A section later, as what started as the beginnings of an idea turned out to be a long, in-depth description of some of the lore, and drew the attention away from the game itself, as such.

I am about to link the other thread to this, using this as a parent thread. Otherwise, the title of the other is "Aftermath: The Scarred Continents".

This game is using a Fourth Edition basic ruleset...I'm sorry to say. And based...err...essentially, I suppose, on 4e lore as well. With changes that are instantly evident.

I'm somewhat worried how long this recruitment thread will be here, though. I recognize that the fourth edition is not widely played, quite possibly for good reasons. Of course, players are always able and welcome to join in later, but I need at least two players, of course. Posting doesn't have to be often. Once a week is minimal, at least three preferable. I myself will post at least once a day unless I give advance notice otherwise.

The system is straightforward. At any time, whether in the middle of a post or at the end of a post, you can attempt-or prepare-some kind of check or roll. Preparing actions can be helpful, such as preparing to make a perception check as you unlock a door, readying to look around the room quickly. Alternatively, private messages can be used for checks, of course.

You are welcome to assume things; responses and the like, but you may be required to edit your post later if something else were to happen.

Anyway, a similar theory applies to combat. Depending on the scale and form the combat takes wil change how it works, whether in a more story-like, unfolding form...or if that doesn't apply and does not or will not work, then it will work as round-to-round, when Private Messages are sent form you to me to ready or make an action you wish, and I will describe the events of the round, detailing battlefield conditions and layout by it's end, and your characters will react as combat changes.

Feel free to offer any advice on the matter, of course.

Oh, and while 'passive' checks (10+Bonus, in other words the "average outcome" of a d20) may be taken into account, many things will only be discovered by active, rolled checks that you will usually have to declare, with myself making the rolls.

You will be given experience points, XP, for a wide variety of actions...from checks that have gone particularly well (particularly for checks that I didn't originally expect you to make). From combat, of course. From digging deeper, and learning more information, for completing minor quests, plot points. You'll be awarded experience, too, from inventive actions. I'm not going to give you LESS experience, after all, if you run and collapse an exit to get away from a group or pursuers rather than fighting them directly.

Inventiveness, Creativity, Preparation and Learning. Those are the keys.

Checks can be made for almost anything. Knowledge checks, and I'll PM some background info your character may know, with experience bonuses. Or other benefits. PMs will also include Passive results..

Okay, wait, I think I'm just about going in circles. You'll see the system when you see the system, eh?

Well, moving on, my next post will detail the basic setting and how to make a character for this.

Setting and Character Prerequisites

Well, the setting goes into far, far more detail the other thread, but, to be brief...
____

The God Wars have torn through the realms, but two centuries after their end, much of the Common Realm, at least, has recovered, more or less. Old Gods have passed, and Gods, both New and Ancient, have returned to fill the gaps.

But threats are ever present...some indeed have only multiplied since the Wars. Things have changed.

But the Realms always need heroes. Regardless of where they come from, or what their intention are. What happened to Pandemonium and Rog is proof of what happens when heroes fail, after all...
____

Anyway, those of you who have scanned my...long-winded background lore on the so-called "Scarred Continents", will know that three continents are the most influential, or at least within knowledge and travel of one another. The great and varied Western Continent. The small, magically-rooted Silvour. And finally, the devastated, barbaric, cut-off continent of Rog.

Depending on your character's origin will change what race you may be, as well as your class or even choice of deity, all by the 4th Edition Standards, any book. You may use a unique class, as long as you have a valid backstory and you can send me all of it's information (due to the difficulty and time consumption of this method, probably only if you've already done this, or you're choosing from some "online" built class. I of course hold the right to limit a class's effectiveness if it is overpowered). Indeed, with a unique backstory, you can come from any continent, even any realm...within limits, obviously, we're not all the Raven Queen's favoured Paladin, born of the Far Realm and raised by Mind-Flayers before being liberated by Githyanki then saved the Lich Queen's life from assassination. -_-'
__

Moving on... If your origins are of Silvour or the Western Continent, then for whatever reason you find yourself approached at some point by an individual offering a job. One for the brave...the curious...or the foolish.

If your origins are of Rog, well...you'll be found later. In short, make sure you're willing to act mercenary (the pay your offered is considerable), or else have a desire to explore, a desire to leave an old life behind, a divine goal to follow, something to prove...even planning betrayal? Some motive to accept such a mad and dangerous offer, if you're from Silvour or the Western Continent.

The areas are detailed, roughly, but feel free to ask ANY questions you require. Be it nations/kingdoms/countries within a continent that fit what you want, to where the religions are spread...anything.

Anyway, here are the basic rules, unless backstory dictates otherwise.

The character sheet you need is a plain 4th Edition Character sheet that I will fill out and maintain if you would like. You can download it online and send it, if that is most convenient. Or simply send me a message with relevant information and I'll work it out. If people ask, I can put a text-based "Empty" Character Sheet on this forum if it's easier for people to copy and paste that into a message and fill it out.

Character sheets.

Well two people appear to be readying characters. For the benefit of everyone, though, Here's a link to where you can download a fillable 4th Edition Character Sheet. If you're unsure about how to fill a field (such as equipment) do whatever you want, or leave it blank. I'll modify it all later. Also, if (again, like equipment) you don't have the room on the sheet to describe as in depth as you would like, then feel free to send me a message seperately describing.

http :// dnd4 . com / dd-4th-edition-character-sheet

I wasn't sure how the link would show up on this forum, so I put spaces at intervals, as you can see. Remove them before using the link, obviously.

Also, if you're using a self-made class or one of the new deities, etc, then I suggest the PDF formatted sheet on the site, as the Excel ones limit your choices. Sve it and send it to my email address on my profile.

Again, as a final note, you can also just describe your character, his/her attributes, skills, feats and abilities in text on the forum or in a message.

P.S. Something I may have forgotten to mention before, though you are encouraged to be creative with the rules, and make checks often whether prompted or not-you will be limited in the number of checks you can make individually through certain amounts of in-game time. Not limited harshly or anything, but just to stop spamming every check that comes to mind, or one character in the group making every check.

Great!

Thanks! So far we have three possible players, two who are working on characters, and one who's sent me most of the character details already.

There's still room, mind you, for anyone who wants to join. So far, things are looking up.

Well..

I fear there are. Races, Classes, Deities (even without my meddling)... Rules haven't changed *that* much, but it might be quite difficult what has. Still, you can try to find the Players Handbooks online, if possible, to learn. If you've played 3.5e, then a lot of the basics and a lot of the advanced things will be familiar, if not the exact same. ^^'

Almost ready!

Well, one more day and this game will be ready to get started!

Now, only one character is so far fully ready to go, but the other characters were to be picked up later in the story anyway, considering the adventure starts on the continent of Silvour.

Better to start now than keep the other players waiting for longer.

Go ahead, by all means!

Feel free to make a character. Anything you wish, within limits, obviously. However, I would prefer it if you did not have them originate in Silvour at this time (if you'd like, feel free to PM me for more info if you want a special backstory to allow you to be a sorceror/wizard/fey race inside the Western Continent).

Remember, you have a lot of leeway if you originate in the Western Continent, due to it's size. The limitations I placed on class/race/deity really only apply in the northern parts of the continent...the sections I have long played and worked out in detail.

Anyway, I'll make the first post of the game and create the thread within a few hours...Gamergirld20 will be taking the stage for a time, so good luck to her!

Okay!

It has begun! Both a Q&A and Game threads have been made, putting the total amount of threads related to this game up to 4.

On the linked recruitment thread, "Aftermath: The Scarred Continents", lore will be placed and updated on occasion...

In fact, if your characters hear certain phrases in a conversation, or otherwise find out certain information, the lore page may update (much like in a few BioWare games) and you may even get an experience bonus.

Then there's this page, where new players should first speak at.

There's the game page (self explanatory)...

And finally, the Q&A page. Anything that's out of character and related to the game, put it there. Questions, ideas... Also, taking the idea from the user "Darren", the GM of a game I'm playing in, the Q&A section will also be host to the Character Sheets of the players (my own copy). I will put up everything from powers, to equipment, to coins, to backstory, to skills...and their experience, and where they have gotten their experience from.
