Very new
Greetings to all, i came upon this site when i was looking for some information regarding Dungeon and Dragons Online Unlimited. I have been a fan of DND for a long time, but never had a chance to do tabletop. However, I was always looking for DND genre games on PC.
I have browse through several threads in this forum and I'm very interested in joining one of these games.
But the question is I do not know where to start, or what do I actually need to start. Do I need to buy a rulebook? or can I find the core information I need to start online?
I have absolutely no idea.
Advance thanks to all vets out there for your advice.
Alvin

Welcome welcome
Hey Alvin,
Welcome to the Red Dragon Inn.
If you want to start a game, you should find the Recruitment forum. There are several games looking for players there, and you can take your pick from a multitude of genres.
As for rulebooks: many people don't own them. As long as the DM is willing to help you out, you should be fine. The forum based dnd or other roleplaying games are mostly about story, character and adventure. You need to have a vague notion of the rules, but most of all you need to be able to realize who you are playing and what that character would do in a certain situation. You need limited knowledge of dnd, good communication skills towards your DM, and the rest will come by itself.
I hope you'll find a nice game!
Good luck,
Almerin

Welcome!
In most cases it's as simple as posting in a thread asking what you may or may not need. Some game masters look for highly knowledgeable players, others for anyone.
See you around soon.

Greetings Alvin!
I'm glad you stumbled into the Inn! *pulls up a chair*
As Almerin said, the best place to start looking for a game is in the recruitment thread. Although if you wanted to get your feet wet before taking the plunge, there is a place for posting games in the Creative Section of the threads.
The Innmates who run games are usually very helpful when it comes to character creation. I have been directed to a few online sites for core information, and have been sent guidelines for making the character. As far as interactive dice rolls ~ most of that is done on the Game Master's side, but very very occasionally you'll have someone running the game who has players roll. So, for the most part, you don't have to worry about dice.
The biggest part of these games is roleplay. And don't be daunted by length ~ effort is all that really counts. *winks*

Allllllllllllllllvin!!!!!!!!!!
Welcome to the Inn! This is a site of Play by Post, we game by adding to the story as the characters. You'll find different games based on different fiction types and different rules bases. But don't worry most game masters will help with the rules. Any standard DND rule set are guidelines most of the time. So with that said you can find the games that are recruiting under the Recruitment Forum, hmmmm that seemed easy.
Our staff here is great and can answer all your questions, when one is online their name is in the purple color.
So be sure to read the terms in the general forum, check out the chatroom and enjoy this frosty mug of "Good Old Froth-n-Slosh"!
Oh and here is a nice fluffy towel, you may need it later.

Thanks for the prompt response!
I'll continue to do more reading and try to catch up as I go along. Would appreciate if there are anymore advice for me, or any links that would really help brush up my knowledge/skills.
Be on my way to adventuring now~

Good day sir!
Welcome to the inn Alvin. I think all the basics have been covered here so I'll just add a warm welcome of my own. There do seem to be a nice variety of games in the recruitment thread between Clockwork, Darren and Shield Wolf. If you don't find anything that tickles your fancy, be patient, there are all kinds of games that pop up around here!
Another good place to start practicing posting in character and telling a story in the PBP format is a free-form game. From what I can tell it's been quiet in these sections of late but no one would be opposed to you firing up your own. As you can tell there is a smorgasbord of options! So get comfy and start gaming, it's good to have you!

Another big welcome
Let me be another of the Inn’s Staff member’s to welcome you to our site. As you hopefully have already seen there’s a lot to do here for sure so take your time and get comfortable with our site. There are a wide variety of AD&D rules sets in use here, even at one time a game run on the very first rules edition.. Basic .. Along with a number of varying game systems from Fantasy to the Sci-fi to the occult to plain horror there is always something for someone including even Free Form games here at the Inn.
The Inn has been around quite some time and for a great majority of us is a second home so please treat the Inn, its Staff and all it’s members with respect and we will treat you the same.
So again welcome its always nice to have new people come to us and I hope you’ll feel quite at home here.
And though this is the greeting I post to all newcomers do not feel that I am not glad to see a new person come to our home, far from it. Its just easier and quicker this way as we do get a lot of newcomers at times. So then If you have any questions about the site feel free to PM myself or any other Staff member as needed.
Also here’s a towel, always keep it handy as Eol, another of our Staff, will at some point lick you and sometimes just sometimes forgets who he has licked and then licks again .

Hm...
He also sometimes licks you and likes the taste, which keeps him coming back for more, pretending, as many do with free samples, that he's forgotten.

Free samples!!! Ooooooh! I hope it's bourbon chicken!
*ka-jinglepounce*
Hmmm... Bourbon chipmunk, perhaps... More Alviny than Simon or Theodory... Delicious nonetheless.
Welcome aboard, Innmate.
