2E DND-style game starting up
Ok, so, I have been developing a campaign for over a year now, in my free time, and realized that i may never get a chance to run it IRL before i lose it. So I decided, why not at least run it here?
So, this is a 2e. game, based in a world I have created, and more specifically, 1 country. (I am an open-world DM, so i don't stop my players from crossing borders. But it will mean a small break in the game while i set up said bordering country.)
I figure this game is set up for a party of up to 6 players, minimum of 3.
Characters will be starting at lvls 3-5, and i forsee that i shall be rolling many dice. lol
I will have game info up in a pre-game thread. right now, im just fishin around for interested ppl.
EDIT;
so, might as well just post story here. lol
Campaign
Taking place in Midland, a country with no oceanic borders. Midland supports a reasonably diverse populice consisting of many races of human and two different dwarven clans. Elves inhabit the Destr' Forest, but have been drivin' from the rest of the land, forced to flee to avoid enslavement, prejudice, and persicution at the hands of the fearful king of the Silver Palace. Unable to master wizardry in his younger days, King Salvator desided this meant the kingdom was weak against magics, so he placed a ban on magic, and began rounding up the fey folk as they were born. this happened 10 years before campaign, so at this point, the only magics you hear about in Midland is the king's personal order of mages, or the legendary arts of Failund, the known safe haven of the elves. when the killing started, Failund quickly opened it's borders to all settlers. When King Salvator tried to make a deal with Failund, offering a full defensive treaty, and a monthly supply of weapons and armor for Failund's under-equipped soldiers. When the Matron of Failund refused, Salvator decreed Midland and Failund were at war the following morning.
for 7 years, Failund had held it's borders mightily before it's defeat, having the added help of scorned elves seeking revenge, but has managed to neither gain ground, nor dent the awesome power of the Silver Armies of Midland. Three years into the war, Whiquay stepped into the conflict, taking the side of Failund. At that time, Whiquay advanced down through The Black Peak Mountains, hoping to take the Midlands from the center out. though successfully taking Talon and Korin, the Whiquay army ended up surrounded when the dwarves of the Black Peak Clan emerged from their hidden Hold and cut the supply lines off while following the obvious tracks of the great force. With no idea of what had transpired, the Whiquay forces never managed to find a suitable battlefield before the dwarven forces were apon them from the north, and the Silver Armies of the Midlands to the west. Though skilled warriors, the Whiquay forces were decimated with little resistance.
However, the Whiquay advance had suprised Salvator, and it took all the troops he had to defend both the eastern and northern borders whilst also rebuilding Korin and Talon. It took close to two years, during which time Failund's army doubled in size from 5 years before, and were now armed with Whiquay steel. Though the odds were better, and Failinian Morale was at an all time high, Midland still held the power to repel any and all invaders. it quickly became a series of skirmishes rather than a war, with no more than a unit or two dead per week. The war had ground to all but a halt, Failund unable to get past Midland defenses, and Midlanders having too low a morale to press an invasion. King Salvator was running out of ideas, and was aware his gold coffers would be empty within 6 months if he didn't do something soon.
Meanwhile, Failund recieves word from Whiquay that while they will still sell Failund weapons and armor at discount prices, they must leave the war, as they can no longer afford an enemy like Salvator. Though seeing little actual war, the two years of supplying Failund, and sanctioning trade to Midland, had decimated the Whiquayin economy.
Hearing about this, Salvator ordered all Silver armies to the eastern border, leaving the northern defences in the hands of the Black Peak Clan, who had not only shown amazing skill in battle, but a level of guile uncommon amongst Dwarves. With over 20,000 troops spread across the eastern border, Salvatore ordered four forts be built to add some strength to the far away battlefield. He commisioned the service of the Ironfist clan to the south, knowing full well that no fort is ever as good as a dwarven fort. Though very expensive, the forts proved their use a full two months after completion, when Failund tried it's first assult in several years. Numbering around 30,000, including elven mercenaries, Whiquay Warriors, and even some orckin soldiers from the no-man's-land that was Bro'Sheff. normally an unstoppable force, the Failund army crashed against the waiting defenders like a wave hitting a cliff. the first three hours was chaos. countless died on both sides before the midlanders retreated behind their fort walls, and in doing so took the advantage. arrows dropped Failundians and their allies like a pleague.
Failund was forced to retreat with only 8,000 troops left. none of the Bro'Shekk soldiers made it, and the surviving Whiquay didn't even number enough to form 500. Despite the weakness of Failund and Whiquay, Salvator did not attack. He knew he held the advantage, so long as he kept his troops in Midland. However, the Paladins of Midland, a force funded by Salvator himself, entered Failund in groups of 10-20 with the goal of finding and capturing/killing all elves they came across, and spread as much propaganda throughout Failund as possible.
The war was now 6 years in, and neither side had done more than blow their own gold. Failund's main soldier population was untrained, and underaged boys, some hardly fit to hold a sword. The Paladins, each member selected being the best in their company, had little trouble moving through Failund, kidnapping elves, killing Failundians, and torching small villages. The Paladins were doing more damage than the whole Midland Silver Armies could, and there were less than 200 of them.
By year seven, Failund offered it's surrender to Salvator, ending the long war, and forfeiting many elven lives. The ones who managed to escape this 2nd elf hunt grouped together and formed the Forsworn, a group dedicated to killing Salvator.
Three years have passed, and though Failund is well on it's way to rebuilding, Midland still holds the power of military strength. An unstable alliance has been reached between the countries, stipulating that Midlander troops may enter and leave Failund for whatever reason, and Failund ships 10% of all natural resources directly to Silver Palace City. In exchange, Midland promises it will not commit any act of war against Failund, unless acted apon first.
Whiquay has recovered from it's economic depression, but without the support of Failund, has no hope of defeating Midland, nor does it have a reason to try. Whiquay remains an independant country, and pays no homage to Salvator.
Though an annoyance to the Midlands, the Forsworn have failed in every attempt to kill the king, or do anything more detrimental than kill a few Silver Guardsmen, and life in the Midlands has calmed down again, though the cloud of war still hovers faintly over the land, threatening the citizens of all the surrounding nations with a war that will be harsher and more destructive than the previous.
Your adventure starts in Far Reach, a small keep and surrounding city built after the war was over, offering a place to start over for all who lost their assets in the war. Though it quickly became a haven for rogues, thieves, and all other sorts of criminals, the city is mostly peaceful, guarded by the Far Reach militia, and seen as the last chance for many seeking to leave their past behind. In the short three years the city has exsisted, it has grown quickly, reaching a population of around 4000 citizens.
(will figure out introductions after characters and backgrounds are sent in.)
Though part of the Midlands, Far Reach is governed by a Lord by the name of Brine Navaar, decsendant of the paladin Druin Navaar. Elected by the people for his obvious leadership skills, and charismatic touch. Once a general in the Silver Army, Brine now does the base requirments to appease King Salvator, but fancies his city as it's own land, or as a territory of the Silver Empire.
Dwarves are a common sight in Far Reach, as the Ironfist Clan makes their home not 20 miles south, hidden in the Ragnok Mountains. Most of Far Reach's economy is based off of trade with the Dwarven Clan, and with Midway. This deal has made Far Reach one of the best armed cities in Midland, minus the small population.
(Available races for campaign)
Dwarf- Likely belong to either Ironfist clan or Black Peak clan. Any other clan is allowed, but will not have connections to midland clans.
Half Elf- Though secrecy of ancestory is required, you will appear human enough to escape most notice.
Half Orc- Though disliked by most, the orckin are tolerated throughout most of Aeinia, and respected as powerful warriors.
Midlander (Human)- A fair skinned people, usually sporting red, orange, or blonde hair.
Tedilian (Human or Halfling)- Mostly a sea faring people, Tedilians are learned in sailing since childhood.
Bro'Shi (Orckin)- Ranging from goblin to ogre, Bro'Sheff is known as the land of the orc. Though many war-waging tribes exsist throughout the wasteland, many larger cities have realised the need for allies. For over 300 years, the Orckin have held an unsteady alliance with humanity. ((No Troll Bloods))
Failinian (Human/ Elf)- Unwelcome in the Midlands, Failinians are slain on sight, elf or not. Failund's people have always appreciated the skills of marksmanship, stealth, and swordplay.
Whiquay (Human/Elf/Half Giant) - Known as the land of the giants, Whiquay has more than a few half giant citizens. Though an enemy in the war, Whiquay are now allowed in midland again, though they are watched suspiciously.
Halfling - With ancestry in every country, the Halflings are well connected, well informed, and well off. very few halflings live lives in poverty.
Note to Gamers: Magic based classes will be hard pressed to learn new magic in Midland. Still possible. just difficult.
also, though I try to keep it 'by the book', some situations are vaguely solved by the rules, and I (the DM) will improvise and make my own rule or two.
if you don't have any 2e. character sheets, follow this link:
