yet another movie thread...

Geez, the common room is dead! Here's a subject, talk amongst yourselves...

I saw Spider Man 3 a couple of weeks ago. My take: superb movie. I have since read quite a few complaints (movie has too many subplots, Mary Jane isn't involved enough, Peter dancing and playing piano is stupid, etc), and I have to wonder... were they watching the same movie I was? This *is* a summer comic book movie, after all. IMHO, the franchise has improved with each film.

Going to see the new Pirates this weekend. Major big expectations here...

SM3

Oh, I've complaint aplenty, and you've heard all of them already.... but I still call it a 15 on the Gygax Standard Scale. Yes, they did some things wring, but it was still a DAMNED GOOD MOVIE. I highly recommend it.

SM3

You would have to make like...500 movies to satisfy everyone because of all the subplots, characters and crap Spider-man and Peter Parker both go through. You could make a TV Show that lasted 10 seasons w/o fail if technology wouldn't boot it.

Spidey shrek Pirates

I liked Spidey 3. Didn't see what the critics were complaining about. It is a comic book movie, not a best picture academy runner.

Shrek the Third was great. Everything you come to expect in a Shrek movie.

I bought my tickets for Pirates of the carribean 3 already (Sat) and I am looking forward to it. Arrgh!

Pirates

I saw Spiderman 3 and wasn't thrilled by it. My take, it had it's moments, but overall it was lacking something.

I saw Pirates during the premiere showings. I will see it again. It was a very funny movie. The only possible complaint, not enough action. I personally think it had more twists than an M. Night Shamalan movie.

hah.. movies!!

*dives into this thread*

Spiderman 3: I was SO excited to see that movie, and perhaps that's why I didn't like it as much as I hoped.
You can blame it on subplots. I really think what made it not nearly as good as 1 and 2, was the fact that everything was to hastily presented. In Spiderman 1 we have the Green Goblin, and in number 2 we have Dr Octopus. One villain is enough for a Spiderman movie. The decision to put 3 in this one was not a good one, in my opinion. Sandman, however cool, interesting etc didn't really come to his right. Especially while in the end it turns out that he never meant to do harm (then why did he join venom in that final battle?).
The fued, or however you name it, between Harry and Peter was a good continuation, and I found the memory loss and unexpected and welcome turn.
Venom deserved more attention and would've suited fine as single villain with the Hobgoblin on the side.
In short: I expected more depth, and not just an action packed, entertaining movie.
One more thing, but that's probably me being european:
I found the patriotic shot of Spiderman in front of the American flag, right before the final battle, a little over the top.

So: what did everybody think about 'Fracture'?

fracture?

I've not even heard of that one. I did however hear that 28 weeks later was a very gory movie. I want to see it now, but I also want to see the invisible, and pirates, and spiderman 3. I rarely go out to the movies these days, which is the downfall of not having a job no money to get yourself into the movies. but meh, I saw shrek 3, it was hilarious. I loved it. Pinocchio going and confusing everyone, it made me laugh so much, because he wasn't lying, but he wasn't telling the truth either, so his nose didn't grow it was funnier than ever. I knew Fiona would be preggy though, so I wasn't surprised.

well

I didn't even notice Spiderman standing in front of a huge American flag before the big fight.
My reasoning for that is...well...reasonable i guess. It's an American comic hero. Why not? *shrugs* Ah well, i didn't notice it, and i was sitting right next to you in the theatre!

I liked SM3, but something was lacking for me. Oh and i really hated it when they put eyeliner on Peter when he turned to a 'bad boy'!! haha, hello emo. >_<
That wasn't necassary!
I enjoyed the movie, though. However, i wasn't captivated in it. I look forward to Pirates and Harry Potter.

Fracture et al

The movie with Anthony Hopkins and Ryan Gosling! I haven't seen it but my sister and mom did and said it was really good. It's on my DVD rental list when it comes out, that's for certain.

Other great, non-blockbuster movies? The Queen was amazing, Helen Mirren deserved her award! The actor who played Tony Blair didn't look like him (in my mind) but by the end, it didn't matter, he embodied the young PM so completely.

Notes on a Scandal was good, but not great...I found it dragged in places for some reason. Bill Nighy was wasted (yes, Davy Jones in Pirates!) as they really didn't give him anything to sink his teeth into.

I wanted to see Disturbia, but missed it...so many good movies swept aside for the summer popcorn blockbusters!

BUT, bring on the summer movies! No deep messages, no moral quandries, just big time fun! We've seen Shrek 3 and I had a blast (Snow White is especially funny in her big moment) and as Al said, we have our Pirates tickets for tomorrow night (yes, taking Miss V to an evening show, she loves a night out like the grown ups .

After that is Ratatouille, Pixar's redemption after the dismal Cars...I just can't wait.

woot!

We're gonna see Shrek Monday, ourselves.

I will admit, I actually enjoyed Cars quite a bit after refusing for the longest time to watch it.

oh yeah!!

Harry Potter and Ratatouille! Those are going to be awesome.
For those who want so see some Pixar preview, go to Quicktime.com/trailers and find the spot where it says: Ratatouille 9 minute preview. It's worth your time!

A movie tip for artsy movie lovers: Thumbsucker was very interesting.

'Fracture' was great I though, but perhaps not known enough.
How about a comparison? Which movie was better, The Notebook or the Lakehouse? If you haven't seen those, what are you waiting for? Both romantic though, so be warned.

notebook...

Have not seen the lakehouse... have no real interest to do so, but I will admit, the Notebook was a great movie.

*sniff*

no interest?

why not? Is it the storyline? It's surreal and yes, of course, not possible. But behind the romance is a great story, and good filming as well.

Spidey

IMHO I would have preferred if they just left the Sandman out. Venom didnt get NEARLY enough screen time (and I mean Grace's venom, not the lame black suit thing).

I agree, way too many subplots for that movie. I still liked it, but walked out of the theater dissapointed. The ending just felt lacking. Too much going on and too quick of a resolution. I wanted another half-hour or so.

Going to see Pirates tonight! Arrrrrrr

Children of Men

Just to cut in and talk about something entirely different than Pirates and Spider-Man: Today, I saw Children of Men, which just came out on DVD in Sweden. Awesome!

The ambience to this movie is just amazing! Mood-wise, it's like a mix of War of the Worlds and 28 Days Later, and it has the coolest single-shot sequences ever!
