An Annoying Concern

Ok first a thank you to Olan for getting the forth coming problem fixed and the Inn up and accessible once again. However this is not the first time I or other Innmates have had this show up when trying to log on.

Warning: mysql_connect(): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (2) in /var/www/html/www.rdinn.net/dbconnect.php on line 137 Unable to connect to MySQL

My questions in regard to the above is what does this warning mean? Why does it keep reappearing and can we Innmates somehow help in stopping it from continuing. If I am overstepping my bounds, just recently returning to the Inn, then I apologize.

Huh... I was going to ask something similar... or just note that I seem to be getting that same error message more often in the last 3-4 months or so than in the past. What does that error message mean?

Edit: My error message is slightly different:

Warning: mysql_connect(): Too many connections in /var/www/html/www.rdinn.net/dbconnect.php on line 137 Unable to connect to MySQL

If I remember correctly Olin said it is a result of the Inn being the target of spam attacks.  Multiple requests sent in a short time.  The protection software protests the site but the overwhelming number of login attempts shuts the site for "real" logins.

If thats the case, that just reminds me why I hate people as a general rule, until they prove themselves worthy of consideration.

Same, Ayrn

I get the same error message as you: a white screen and the 'too many connections' message.

The attack is by bots. Keeper is correct. It is very annoying.

Hope I don't sound dumb...

What exactly are 'bots'? You mean robots? What kind? What do they do?

Think computer driven auto phone dialers. They can call a mess of numbers fast.

Oh, I get it now.

But why do they even exist? What is their purpose? Just to screw things up for everyone?
