Sandpoint
Sandpoint is found 50 Miles north of Magnimar (a major city) along the rocky coastline known as the Lost Coast. It was once a Varisian campsite in the shadow of an ancient ruined tower. It is now the Lost Coast’s largest town
The Lost Coast is a peculiar country, Fog draping rolling landscape. Damp and lonely moors and small woodlands. Further inland, river valleys lined by majestic redwoods wind between ragged tors and limestone escarpments. In essence a vast isolation
Along the lonely roads about every 25 miles or so is a roadside inn. Low stone shrines to Desna, goddess of wanderers and patron of the Varisians give further opportunity for shelter.
As one approaches Sandpoint, the footprint of civilization grows more clear. Wooden bridges across creeks and the coast grows wider and more well-kept. Sight of Sandpoint from any direction is hidden by large upthrust limestone pavements called the Devil’s Platter or by rocky outcroppings know as Whistler’s Tors. As you round the final bend, however, Sandpoint’s smoking chimneys and bustling streets greet travelers with open arms. The southern entrance is governed by a wooden bridge and the north by a low stone wall. A stone gatehouse is watched by one or two guards and a sign with a mirror reads “Welcome to Sandpoint! Please stop and see yourself as we see you!”
Sandpoint is a small town with a conventional mayor (Kendra Deverin)
Typically NG in alignment, the town has a few assets but not many
Because of this there is relatively little crime aside from the occasional Goblin attacks
The current population is just over a thousand, mostly human but some Halflings, dwarves, gnomes, elves and even a half-orc
The sherrif is Belor Hemlock and the town priest is Abstalar Zantus
There are a few nobles in Sandpoint but they arn’t as wealthy as the nobles of Magnimar
In recent history, settlers from the southern nation of Cheliax came to Varisia. The city of Magnimar was settled by colonists who were dissatisfied with a strong reliance on Chelish support in Eastern Varisia. Four powerful families from Magnimar had their eyes on the region of Sandpoint but instead of fighting each other they joined together. They formed the Sandpoint Mercantile League. This league began a aserios of talks with the local Varisians and eventually an aggremant was made promising to incorporate the worship of Desna into the town’s cathedral and a generous share of profits made by businesses to the locals. This agreement helped Sandpoint to take off and thrive. The four families were the Kaijitsus (glassmakers and jewelers) the Valdemars (shipbuilders) theScarnettis (loggers) and the Deverins (farmers and brewers)
Most of the buildings of Sandpoint are made of wood with stone foundations and wood shingle roofs. The majority are single –story structures. Some buildings, including the temple, are newly constructed as a major fire destroyed much of the town at one point. Downtown is build on a gentle slope that runs from a height of about 60 feet above sea level to the west down to only a few feet above the waterline to the east and south. The harbor is a fairly deep natural harbor, 30 feet for most, with sharply rising slopes near shore. The waters of the Turandarok river sind down from the hinterlands, skirting Devil’s Platter to empty into the harbor. The river is often used to transport lumber harvested far upriver down to the local saw mill. A few hundred feet north of town rises an upthrust spur of rocky land topped with a few trees. This is known as Chopper’s Isle, once home to Sandpoint’s most notorious criminal. Local’s believe it is haunted and stay away. Children dare one another to go to the base at low tide and touch the cliff, but no-one has been known to visit the top in years
The sight that strikes all visitors is the ruins of the Old Light. The original height is unknown but some say it may have once stood 700 feet tall. No-one seems to know for sure what this structure once was.
