Wondering
I know this may be knit-picking, as well as protecting my character's future usefulness to the crew, but isn't "Rewire and Reroute Electrical" damn close to the Technical Engineering skill?
Regardless I have been seriously enjoying reading your adventures, or more your attempt to exit the mine with your lives (as that is where I picked up reading), and am buzzing knowing that I'm joining you. I hope Sam's able to keep his head down and lose the chwen feh feh pi goh ung jeong jia ching jien soh purple bellies.
EDIT: Why ever the hell did my whine of a post end up top of a new page?
Also, that long spout of mandarin isn't going to be translated by me. Rest assured it is very very rude.

Don't worry your safe :)
Technical Engineering – If it has a computer, you can work with it.
•Specialization: Communications, computer programming, hacking, security devices, technical repair, create/alter technical devices
Mechanical Engineering – You know machines and how to fix them
•Specialization: Invention, machinery maintenance, mechanical repairs, plumbing, security systems, identify problems, rewire and reroute electrical.
Rewire and Reroute Electrical is more Ship/Vehicle based I believe. I assume by your saying 'protecting my character's future usefulness to the crew' that your character is some type of Computer geek. Well where your good with comps, I don't know the first thing about them and would suck trying to fix one. Vice versa as I'm good with Mechanics you suck and would be totally lost in an engine room. Unless you too have the same skills I do THEN it could be MY job that's in danger
However it pans out welcome to the game........

hum
If you are going to bring what the books say into it the Mechanical Engineering specialisms specifies mechanical devices, mechanical repairs, and mechanical security systems. The Technical Engineering specialisms specifies technological devices and technical security systems as well as listing Electronics as a specialism.
My dude isn't a computer specialist, he is a technician. The type of person you call to fix broken communications equipment or to repair the damage a sexy confidence trickster has done to your navigational systems. I'm hoping our two characters can work very closely together, with Wolf keeping an eye on the larger mechanical systems of the Rocinante and John keeping an eye on the smaller tecnical systems. A "you keep her flying and I'll keep her flying in the right direction" kinda partnership.
I kinda see Mechanical Engineering as dealing with moving stuff and Technical Engineering as dealing with electrical stuff. I saw that you didn't have a technician, or wouldn't when Sam left, so moved to create a character to fill that role.
Cheers for the welcome!
EDIT: Spellings.

Welcome Loki...............
BTW, Asher in the past has been a helper in the engine room. He's not a chief mechanic but he has skills and is trying to learn a bit more. As Public Relations Man it doesn't leave much to do in flight. So I think I'll keep him trying to help both you and Wolf. It never hurts to another pair of hands available.

not sure why this is an issue
Loki's character I accepted into the game and into the crew because he has a lot of skills that cross over. My reasons being - what if someone is injured badly? Take the ending of the last campaign - what if Brigit attacked Willow first? What if Wolf was killed and had to be revived and required extended care? Suddenly you have no mechanic or medic (or pilot or whatever) and you could be in a world of hurt. So I figured that Wyatt would be thinking about that and thinking a pilot with medical expertise, plus tech and mech couldn't hurt to cover if someone is hurt. Which is incidently what role Bowman was gonna play. So officially John Ryan is the tech guy, Tess is the pilot and Wolf is the mechanic but it never hurts to have an extra set of hands in the engine room as the repair scene in the last adventure showed.

Gear?
Well as for gear, I'd hope to replace all the flashbangs, Optibombs and ammo. I'd like to see Ash get plate vest this time. He really didn't like being shot in the back. How about a Derringer with a boot holster?

do you need the arsenal?
Seriously, don't you think you might not want to sleep on all that ammo considering what happened at the jail?

Well of Course..........
A man needs the tools of his trade. This is just the start.
Ash hasn't even started collecting the BIG guns yet.
Besides he doesn't play with gernades in bed, that's a girl thing.

Just a couple of thoughts...
...not that I'm, in any way, trying to manipulate anyone else's character or anything, just a couple of thoughts I had as I was reading these last few posts in the QnA...
Tann - are you sure that you want to completely dump Wolf's covert skill? Note that "covert" doesn't necessarily have anything to do with size or being physically sneaky, so the rationale that the big mechanic wouldn't have use for the covert skill threw me a bit... Aside from the sneaky-dekey bits, covert could also be used for say, rigging booby-traps (to keep some busy bodies from tinkering with Roc's mechanicals) or sabotaging other bits and pieces of equipment belonging to them that might have a dust up with our crew, etc, and ensuring that those "modifications" go unnoticed without a successful check... COuld be useful in slinking about the Cortex all unidentifiable and such, too... *shrugs*... Just putting it out there, really... as I said, not trying to sway anything... Your character, your choice (given Alacrity's approval, of course).
Ody - A plate vest? Damn but the Kid might've rubbed up against Sam's twitchy a little, huh? Seriously, though, I'm not entirely sure that "plate vests" exist in this world outside of say Alliance Armor or some such - at least, I don't know that I've seen anything like that listed in any equipment tables or whatever. I suppose (if Alacrity allows it) the Kid could pick one up "black market" style, or have one made, or whatever buuuuut I'll bet ya my last two platinum that it's gonna be a bit heavier and more cumbersome than a ballistic mesh one and may play havoc with the Kid's speed and whatnot.
There was something else... what was it....???
Oh yeah!
The Arsenal!
As far as Ash's 'gun collection' goes (and given the fact that the Kid doesn't seem to be done collecting) I'm not sure that there's room in Asher's bunk for what all he has now, let alone what he's got marked as "must haves" in his latest "Guns and Geishas" magazine... That said, and according to the shiny Firefly blueprints pack that I've been ogling, there is an armory (read: big damn gun locker) aboard most fireflies that haven't repurposed the space which could be used for storing those... ahem... extras, so as the Kid ain't sleeping on a bed of go-boom.
Anyhoo... just thoughts... grain of salt 'em, if you like... just putting 'em out there.

plates and mates
There is a plate vest in the book. It is basically a ballistic vest that has been modified with an extra plate in front and back. The important part about this is I found out I was doing Ballistic vests completely wrong. Haha... Umm. Yeah. Sorry about that. I was subtracting the -1W but not converting the wounds to stun, which would have changed some outcomes (Wolf and Luke so it balances out). I am sorry about that. One thing to note about the plate vest is it brings your agility down one or two steps so that would effect dodge, shooting, running, climbing etc etc.
The last campaign really did not require a lot of covert. The next one, well covert will be an asset, let me tell you.
Those of you who have submitted changes to character, bear with me I will have time to look at them later on. I need to post the remaining loose end tie ups first.

Don't have that one...
...Core rule book, some "interwebs" supplimentals, and my shiny blueprints is all I've managed, so far. Should probably look into Spaceships and Six Shooters, though. The Firefly Verse is soooo chock full o' goodies!

which reminds me
Thank you, Al, for showing me 4shared initially with Destiny's Flight. It has helped expand my interweb pirateness greatly. *winks*
Have I mentioned that I'm very excited to start this campaign?
Perhaps maybe a little over excited, to the point where I'm trying my best not to type in 'frontier slang'?
