The happening

As Fantasy said, we watched the Happening last weekend. Man, how a great director can go completely wrong... twice.

When Shyamalan made 'lady in the water', I thought that it was a one time miss. But the Happening SUCKS!

It's not just that the story is kinda weak, because it could've worked with better directing, acting and a better score.
The story is simple: people start killing themselves in masses on the east coast of the US. A group of people flees the area and starts looking for a way out. After a beginning with many unused opportunities for some good scares, the movie goes down in quality fast, and turns into something of a cheap 70s sci-fi thriller that just doesn't work.

I read a 'you didn't get it!' review on imdb.com that made some kind of excuse for the suckiness of this film, but it didn't convince me. If there was a reason for the director to purposely put awkward scenes in his movie, then we can say that Ed Wood made awkward movies on purpose and praise him for it. That's just nonsense.

too bad

I had read where M. Night had called the Happeneing the "best B horror movie ever made", and worried at that sort of label.

Lady in the Water was AWFUL, so I was already a bit leery. Thanks for the heads up.

What?

You mean Ed Wood didn't make them like that on purpose?

All childhood fimmaking career dreams are hopelessly crushed.

The Happening

I agree The Happening was a complete and utter waste of my time.

Signs/Six Sense were good...he's gone downhill since then.

When I saw this trailer in the Iron Man movie... the first 60 seconds had me hooked, aztec warrior decendants and what not, but I was leery as I saw it was from Disney, didn't know what direction it was going to go in... Course the direction it did go in ushered an audible groan from everyone in the theatre along with a few intermingled chuckles.

Watched some George today

Just had to mention here that I watched both Bill and Ted movies today, along with Dogma, in honor of George Carlin. Wish I had one or two of his stand-up specials to watch, but guess I can go to YouTube and watch some.

R.I.P. George. Go hang with Buddy Christ for a while. Heh.

wow

You mean that was in Iron man? Not for me. Guess I'm lucky

But man that Zelda movie looked... ok. I just hope they find a left handed actor. I'm already mad at the Wii twilight princess... to screw up the movie too would be too much.

SUNSHINE was a good movie

I agree Meri, I didn't have high hopes for it but was very plesantly surprised.

Worst movie I've ever seen was Def Con 4 followed closely by DragonWars.

action movie

Another recent Netflix view was Shooter, starring Mark Wahlberg (Marky Mark is a much better actor than he ever was a rapper).

Here's the basic premise: an elite ex-marine sniper is recruited by the US government to help prevent an assasination attempt on the president. He is asked to scope out the area and share how he'd plan such an attempt so that they (the CIA?) can prevent it.

Only, he is betrayed and the attempt goes down anyway - and he is framed for it. Obviously, he doesn't like said framing, and wants to set things straight.

Okay, to enjoy this movie, you need to leave a good chunk of your disbelief at the door, but it is a very satisfying popcorn-action flick. The acting isn't bad at all, and the story is well enough told to keep you interested. There are a couple of loose ends and a couple of credibility-stretching moments and/or stunts, but all in all, this was a worthwhile use of two hours. While not quite up there with, say the various Jason Bourne movies, this is one of the better action films that I've seen in some time.

Square Pigs

I watched an all-time favorite of mine at my buddy's last night...Space Truckers.

Dennis Hopper, George Wendt gettin' sucked butt-first through a space station porthole, and square pigs.

Need I say more?

Just out of curiosity, has anyone else seen it?
