mmmhmmm
Speaking of birthdays.....
Happy Birthday Al!...for the 3rd (or 4th?) time.
I would make a thread, but i figure the lovely Cathy would probably get on that. Unless you're all too busy with packing for Maryland....?

Cool.
I think that is an excellent idea! Happy belated birthday to me. Yesterday was my 27th b-day.
Today is my 4th day of classes here at the SC4 college in Port Huron. Although I missed my 3rd day of classes because I stupidly drank at Midnight and the alcohol*sp* which I hadn't drank in many years, knocked me on my a double s. So there you have it. I had a hangover for the first time in my life yesterday and I do NOT recomend it. It only served to make me wonder why on earth people purposely get drunk repeatedly, knowing they will have to suffer the effects of a hangover the next day! Why why why would anyone want to do that to themselves?! I just don't get it. It's like, you'd have to be a glutton for punishment in order to ever drink enough to get you drunk again, after having had a hangover. *shrugs* Yuck, and double yuck.
Anyway, yay me, I in college for the first time, and so far everything is going really well. I just hope it continues that way.
(Hey, Olan, and all other MODS. Please do not hurt me for posting this here. I just realized it is entirely off the subject....I just ran with the B-day subject mentioned by Al. )
And as for the Chat room issue. It is kind of a pain to stay in the chat, the way I used to do, until someone comes in when I keep getting booted every few minutes. So,etimes the chat will let me stay in for long periods of time without booting me, but most of the time, I get booted as does most people apparently. But if I log in and I see someone in the chat, I go in to chat with them for a bit.

Outage?
Posting from work here, just a quick question - was there a hiccup with the site the last couple days? I kept pulling 'connection refused' error messages trying to hit either the site itself or the forum directly, from both IE and Firefox on my home system. I haven't had a chance to check from there yet today, so this may be a moot point/issue on my side....just wanted to check.

Yep...yep...
There was definitely an outage of some sort. I was getting the same message regardless of browser over the weekend. Thankfully, it didn't last long, though... thanks to a mighty whip-crackin' from our illustrious Webmaster.

well...
I just changed the code for the "Last five topics" to group them by topic.
In other words, no more multiples of the same topic up there. If the topic you are posting to is currently #2 on the list, the old way would put your post at #1, the old entry at #3, and drop something off the list. Now, your topic floats back to #1, but nothing drops. That way, more topics get exposure.
Thoughts?

The only downside
Only downside is that if one topic gets posted in twice in the same day and nothing else, its difficult to see changes, but I like the idea of giving more exposure. Its a small price to pay to actually click twice to see if something has been done since you posted.

Ye olde
Ah... ye olde "no multiple topics" fix! I actually implemented that over at my own website a while ago. In my opinion, it's definitely the way to go. Good job!

well...
...the reason it took so long is that I couldn't simply use a GROUP BY statement in my sql. There are a lot of things going on in this forum, depending on whether or not you are logged in, and on the permission syou are logged in with (user, mod, admin, etc). There are joins going on four or five tables, and a GROUP BY broke it.
So I ended up doing an array with some variables holding check in them, discarding duplicates, until we get to five topics.

most recent page first...
After resisting this forever (stubborn as a what did you say?), I have changed the way the forums display messages.
If you do not indicate a page that you'd like to jump to, you are taken to the last page of a topic - in other words, you can ready the most recent posts first.
If you would rather do it the old way, go to your profile (View/Edit your Profile link at the bottom of every page) and check the box that says "Default to thread start?".
You're now defaulting to the most recent page.
Enjoy!

um...
...well, yeah. In internet explorer, that's done by going to Tools -> Internet Options -> Home Page.

Names Cast of Characters.
Is it possible to get a game name and avatar seperate from user name? So that someone looking at a post knows what character is posting it because all to ofter the player forgets to put his own name into the post. IT would save having to go back and forth to identify characters. One RPG online has a section for each game called Cast of Characters. Character names and players login names are listed as well as link to mail. Just wondering.
