So I've been poking around the interwebs here to see what other communities are making of this trailer. Turns out the only people who are trolling about here are the ones who don't realize its a reboot, or people who think an explosion-laden 2 minute teaser trailer equals another michael bay movie. So it's doing pretty hot with the informed populace, if anyone was wondering.

I'm a bit of a closet Trekkie (that sounds kinky to my ears for some reason...) and I do think it looks awesome.

The fact that they have a really good cast of actors helps of course.

I recognize exactly three of those actors. The most important among them being Carl Urban as McCoy (who has apperantly been thrown down a couple rungs on the ladder of major charecters). Anyway, one of my main reasons for being so hopeful for this movie twofold. One part of that being I REALLY want to like a J. J. Abrams movie. I liked Alias up till its last season tanked on me, Lost moved way to slow for me to care, and Cloverfield was alright, but nothing special. But he seems like one of these guys with a LOT of potential, and I really wanna be part of the group that reaps the rewards of good filmmaking. The other part of the whole twofold thing being that, as I mentioned earlier, Star Trek did go over the hump a bit in the last 10-15 years or so. Now, I come from a massive trekkie family. But despite having seen the vast majority of every show, and all the movies, Star Trek never really appealed to me. Here's why: Gene Roddenberry created a future in which, right from the get-go, all humanity's problems were solved from the get-go. No war, no desiese, perfect. Or at least, it's perfect from a "hey, wouldn't it be great if the world was like this?" standpoint. As marketable entertainment? Not so hot. I was apperantly the minority here, because here we are, talking about Star Trek almost 50 years on. Also, the infalible cast of charecters who were seemingly unable to make a wrong choice made it a little hard to relate to. But with starting back before the whole future perfect scenerio the way Abrams is, seems like they're starting to leave a bit more room for adventure and interesting conflict than they were before. And as a young impressionable adult with a loose grasp on reality growing up in a culture that glorifies violence, I can honestly say I'm more excited about this than I ever was about Picard never getting anything wrong.
Not to say the old Trek had no redemable features, but it's just that this looks more like something I'd pay $15 to see on a screen as big as my house.

Star Trek cleary presented a Utopian vision of the future, of that there's no doubt. And, even if it didn't appeal to you, I would argue that's precisely where it's attraction lay.

Right back in the original series, Roddenberry presented a world free of hunger, racial prejudice, sexism (well apart from the skimpy skirts and the bodice-ripping Kirk), dictatorships etc. It was a radical vision of the future that spoke to the present because we (living in that present) could not dare to dream of overcoming these divisions.

Just think about it for a moment. A black woman as a bridge officer, a Russian as a pilot, a Japanese as another officer - during the height of the Cold War, when segregation was very much in effect, and memories of the Second World War was still fresh.

You can argue that it's a fantasy or too perfect a vision of the future. But frankly it does no one any harm to dream of a better world.

Oh and they had a fat Scotsman. That's always worth a laugh...

No, Gina, I'm not arguing it's validation as a veiw of a desirable future or as art. I'm just saying that, watching it as a kid, I remember thinking a lot, "well, I'm definately appreciating this, but I think I could be watching something a little more fun.". And that's what the've done here. I'm hoping for the best of both worlds. Oh, and that fat scotsman? Now he has zombie fighting on his resume.
