I've seen....7 of them, and a remake of one of them. So like...7.5

Also I strongly disagree with many of them. And with the whole list. I'm just confused. And confrontational apparently.

hmmm

I do not really understand the point of the list. Usually such a thing is for jokes "because it is true", but this one seems to apparently loose that quality because out of all us D&D geeks, no one has seen 15/20 of them...

Epic Fail as a funny/true list?

17/20

I've seen 17 out of the 20 so not sure if it's just a funny list or if he was serious when he/she came up with it.

well in either case

RDInn so far has decided it is not a true list of geeks (presuming that we are indeed geeks).

In all honesty, i think it is less of titles that really matters then types: movies with a certain... geeky feeling. all in all, I have found that there are different kinds of geeks, just like there are different kinds of religions; so it would be really hard to encompass all of them in one category.... this is speaking on the concept that this list was indeed serious >_<

Hmm...

Well... I've no idea why those movies would be picked on an ultimate geek movie list, but of those, I've seen 17. Or those I know I've seen. I'm fairly sure haven't seen Pi, Office Space or Pirates of the Silicon Valley. And looking at IMDB it's fairly unlikely that I ever will.

17/20, I guess I'm officially (by boardgamegeek standards at least) an official Geek. So, what else is new?

Bah, I admit being a geek. After all aren't all roleplayers at least to some degree. What this really only proves, me thinks, is that I'm old.

I've seen all except 11 and 20 from the original list, although NetFlix has them all, but neither seem interesting to me, so I probably won't bother. It was nice to find that Hackers is available on streaming. I may sit and watch that Monday after class. I haven't seen that in years.

That, and I've seen every other movie mentioned so far.

I'm with Shades331 on this overall though. It's not the movies themselves, but the types of movies in question.

Besides, nobody tells me if I'm a geek or not...

Movie Geek

Well I've seen 13 movies off the list... and I'm willing to bet my husband has seen the other seven that I haven't (between the two of us we are a super geek). But then again I am also a BIG movie buff and have seen/own a ton of other movies as well.

But I think the real issue with this list is is that the definition of 'geek' is not really given and is a difficult thing to peg down. There are lots of different kinds of 'Geeks' out there really.

This list seemed a little more geared toward 'computer/scifi geeks'

I know that for a group such as ourselves I would have more more fantasy/Medieval films.

Dragonheart
Men in Tights
Robin Hood (Kevin Costner)
Rob Roy
Highlander
Braveheart
How to Train your Dragon
Princess Bride

Then, like someone mentioned earlier, there are more adventure geeks. And I'll put their two recommendations here as they were excellent:

Indiana Jones
The Mummy
Boondock Saints
Die Hard
Snatch
Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels
Fight Club

And of course there are also comic book geeks and all the comic book movies are too many to mention here but I will plug my favorite - Hellboy because I can.

And you certainly can't leave out some of the Scifi classics not listed on the boardgamegeeks list such as Tremors...

Geekdom has many faces, and in the end you really have to tailor your own 'must see movie list' to go with what you and your friends are constantly quoting and referencing while gathered in some geeky social situation

M.

Well, very nice to see the responses thus far. . .

TheWiz, ShieldWolf and Meredith all make excellent points--we really can’t measure our relative geekiness from a very short list of films, and especially when we don’t know the geek-cred of the original list-maker, and *chuckles* even more so when there doesn’t seem to be a codified set of criteria for being a geek. What type of geek are we trying to measure here: Techie Geek, Sci-Fi Geek, Comic Book/Superhero Geek, Fantasy Geek, Anime Geek, or just all-around Movie Geek?

In the interests of slightly more focused discussion, why don’t we do little “Top 10” lists for a specific sub-genre, such as Meredith’s Fantasy Themed list? Just so long as we keep in mind these are just opinions, and it’s all in fun.

(Btw, TheWiz, your comment about what one reads speaking more volumes than what one watches struck home with me. I’d like to see you start something along those lines in another survey thread. I’m sure the results will be nothing short of fascinating!)

So, with this in mind, here’s my Top 10 Films to See if you consider yourself a Fantasy Geek:

In no particular order
1. Lord of the Rings (trilogy)
2. Legend
3. Ladyhawke
4. Dungeons & Dragons: Wrath of the Dragon God
5. Dragonheart
6. Beowulf (2007 Robert Zemeckis)
7. Mirrormask
8. Pan’s Labyrinth
9. Labyrinth
10. Krull

Haha

Yes, good choices DragoDorn! I just wanted to keep the list relatively short. I hereby replace Mirrormask with Conan the Barbarian, and Krull with Dragonslayer. Willow's got to be on that list somewhere, too--guess I'll bump off the second (and vastly superior) D&D movie.

You have put Labyrinth on a list of movies in all seriousness.

This is troubling to me.

we missed those two?

Wow, yeah I can't believe the original list didn't have Willow or Labyrinth on it.

Out of the new movies listed, I've not seen Ladyhawke in its entirety yet. I've already added it to the my queue of movies on blockbuster online and just have to wait for it along with several other movies on the list I want to rewatch to get here lol

Keep those good movies coming. I think we should compile a new list and send it to that site lol

AND someone should definitely start the survey thread about the books read instead of movies watched.

I put Labyrinth on my additions to the list, not sure why it would be troubling to anyone with at least half-way decent taste in movies. Especially a classic like that one.
