character deaths...

I have something of a reputation as an evil DM, due to the deaths of some of the PCs in our groups. I personally hold that usually, characters only die due to really bad decision making, though there are cases when the dice are simply stacked against them. I do try to avoid "bang, you're dead" type moments like Admiral's poison cloak, though I have used items like that when truly necessary (I remember one annoying rogue that kept stealing things for no reason other than to steal, causing no end of grief for the other players. So he found an enchanted necklace. Without waiting to see what the enchantment did, he put it on, and it strangled him. Aaaah, how satisfying! But I digress...).

One in particular comes to mind right now. I had a very sucessful game here on the Inn - this game had run for a couple of years in the forums. This is how the group's party leader - a cleric of Solanis (god of light and life) met his end.

You see, the group was undertaking a bold mission to rescue one of their compatriots who had been captured. During said rescue, they picked up a blind oracle who held the keys to the next major leg of thier quest.

This cleric (Germon was his name), fell out of favor with his god during the rescue attempt due to major violations of his religion - he murdered several prison guards, guards who has already been subdued. He could have tied them up, locked them in cells, gagged them, etc. Instead, he chose to execute them. The player was unhappy with me, but I ruled that, since he WAS a priest of the god of light and life, his deity was greatly displeased, and pulled Germon's ability to cast spells.

The party had to fight their way out, and their opponents included a priestess of the goddess of pain and torture. They prevailed, but Germon was hit with an especially nasty curse that sapped his strength for a long period of time.

The escape route took the group deep beneath the castle, through a cistern that connected to an underground river. One of the party members was pulled beneath the water by a type of large water serpent. Healthier members of the party entered the water in a rescue attempt (that eventually suceeded), but Germon - barely able to walk due to the effects of the curse he was suffering - foolishly dove in, as well.

I warned him that he was barely able to swim at all, much less manage to pull someone out of the water, even if he could find them. I gave him oppotunities to retreat. He did not.

He was attacked and ripped to shreds by four juvenile water serpents. A few pieces of his robes made it to the surface, nothing else.

.

I think thats a great way for a fallen cleric to die. He wanted to repent his sins and make it up to his gods, thinking if he survived that he will get it back maybe, and if not, he served his purpose.

well...

Actually, it had nothing to do with repentance, the player never really agreed with me that his character should have fallen. It had more to do with a romantic interest the cleric had with the character that got pulled under the water.

I hated it, too... the player was irritating me to no end, but I think that a "path to repentance" scenario would have made for GREAT gaming.

If I was playing the cleric, thats how I would of played the character, especially if he had just fallen. But a love interest, for a cleric? he should of been a bard or something if he is willing to risk his life for a lady, knowing full well theres a good chance he might die, and not to repent for his bad sins. And also, i agree on you with the falling thing. theres a reason why he is the god of light and LIFE . Not god of light and kill all prison guards.

I knew it!

I knew there was something missing in the D&D pantheon. There really should be a God of killing-all-the-prison-guards. Or, if we want to think a tad bigger, a God of killing-all-the-mooks

=D

if you really put that in your pantheon, I would most likely be a patron saint of it!

Least Favourite Death.

Well... I have only had one D&D death that counts, because I do not count the death of characters in video games. His name was Milo Greenbottle. He was a halfling cleric who worshipped Olidamarra I believe. He was with a group of other clerics in a dark campaign similar to the ravenloft series. The world in which he lived had been suddenly torn into by a dark realm of undead and evil, and he was forced to fight his way through the game. In any case, eventually the DM got tired of having so many character's around so he had us all fight one another in separate rooms without us realizing we were fighting each other, due to various glamours. The thing that annoyed me was that he obviously rigged the match, even going so far as to give the player I was fighting the chance to reroll his feats so that he had Die Hard. He didn't even make the prerequisite of Endurance. In any case, Milo died. That was the first real life campaign I was ever in. However, it got me hooked so... here's to the lame DM that did well enough in the story line, but if there was a smite button around at the time, I would have pressed it upon him a thousand times over.

It was my first long-term DND game the reason i started playing...

I was playing a (stealth) rogue, so i naturally had comically high balance and climb using these i thought it would be usful to stand on an adult black dragon's back repeatedly lifting up and jabbing my daggers in. A few rounds into this little battle and the rest of my party was either dead or being our deserting sorcerer and running away...my fellow players (ooc of course) kept telling me to give up, but i wanted that dragon dead, but my dreams were instantly shattered the moment the dragon recalled the existance of a ceiling about 10 feet up, so it jumped and i splatted...end of rogue.

I was playing a level 4 human fighter once, I'd just killed a couple of orgers and on very low health. Next thing I know I'd been ambushed by goblins for some reason, the had me unconscious that very round.

Actually...

Attacking a building full of thugs can do that to you. I'm not being evil, I'm just ridding the world of insane characters

You know what they say: Only death cures stupidity.

sorry for repeating

Those who know this story, please ignore... but Skari's mention of death curing stupidity compels me!

I DMed a very long running game here (same one with the priest who died so badly) at the Inn that kept the same core group of players, but for some reason (mainly that most of the players who wanted the role ended up flaking on us), could never keep a mage for an extended period.

One such mage was Michael the mage. Michael decided that he didn't want to be like other mages - no wimpy staves or daggers for him. He would wield a sword!

Even though this was 2nd edition D&D, I allowed it; he simply lived with the nonproficient weapon penalty. I told the player that as he progressed, I'd allow him to become proficient with it, provided he demonstrated a focus via roleplay.

Unfortunately, he never lived long enough. The group was tracking down a wizard who had stolen two very powerful enchanted daggers. Now, they (the group) were level 1 at the time. The villain was a good deal more powerful than they were (he was supposed to be a recurring bad guy). He had demonstrated his ability to fling lightning bolts, for instance.

The group managed to trap the evil wizard at the top of a steep hill. Michael the mage used his only spell - grease - on said hillside in an attempt to somehow make the wizard slip and fall.

As the party considered their next actions, Michael then decided on a brave frontal assault. Sword held aloft, he charged!

By himself.

Up the greased hill.

Wearing no armor, possessing virtually no combat skill.

Or hit points.

At the powerful mage.

Who calmly stood there and fried Michael to a cinder with another lightning bolt. Natural selection 1, stupid mages 0.

LOL

After trekking across a vast, periouls expanse my group stopped to rest along this moss covered ridge that gradually sloped upwards into a huge hilly mountain thing, and someone shoved their sword into the slope. It was a dying, dirt covered moss dragon and we were all barbecued.
