Eldritch Knight
Sounds more the way I'm thinking of going... more focus on martial prowess with magic to supplement as opposed to the other way around. Am also considering getting a little different with gear than I'm used to... Perhaps a spear and shield as weapons, light armor (studded leather at most... maybe chain but leaning toward leather...
Aaaaand I'm thinking out loud in posts, again.

I'm not sure how it worked in previous dnd games but there are tags that a weapon can have that changes them. If you're planning on being a dex char, you won't be able to use the spear effectively because it doesn't have the finesse tag.
The finesse weapons off the top of my head are dagger, shortswords, scimitars and rapiers.
Im looking forward to hearing more about your char

The idea...
...was kind of born from an earlier idea I had for "expanding" the Inn's Audalis campaign setting, actually. A few years ago, I made an attempt at working up a battle mage class/group that I was going to call The Dragons of Saieliel. The initial write up I did for it can be found here.
Anyhoo, my idea was to create something similiar, at least as far as the character goes (maybe not the group as whole)... I'll wait on more world info and such before I dive too deep into how this character will work, but that's where I snatched the idea from, anyway.

Hmmmm
I was tempted by Druid, but given the spell casters already, maybe not. Plus the spells thing. How would a druid fit?
Maybe rogue then. Got enough fighters at the moment.

I think so far we have a martial class and nothing else has been decided. Druids are probably fine?
I'm actually interested to hear more about how spellcasters are regulated as well though.
I haven't decided anything else but I was thinking of going a bow wielding support bard, college of valour. That way he could be a spellcaster but wouldn't have to show it... Thinking of being on the wrong side of the law
I'd be happy to fill in any backline that we need though, I"m pretty flexible.

Druids!
Personally, and you guys can roll up whatever you like - speaking of which I have no preferences on how you do that, honestly. Point buy, Standard array, roll them bones, whatever - but I want to encourage you all to make your character the race and class you want. Don't worry about rounding out a party. Roll up what interests you. That said...
Druids fit really well. The continent of Khadask, where Ghostwood and its precious groves are, has several different types of landscapes. There's mountains, plains, forests, desert, swamps, ruins, etc. There's a pantheon of gods, as well, for those looking at, or thinking of, clerics or patrons.
I still have a megaton of info to dump in the Q&A too, but if there's something you want to know more about right away, let me know (like the magic regulators, that's coming!)

I appreciate the disclaimer about rolling up whatever you want
As for DnD party comps, one of the things that I like about this edition is that it doesn't really need any class. I know a topic that I learned when I first started playing is that clerics or healing isn't even necessary which is rather nice.
So for now I have 2 char concepts I'm considering
Arcane trickster Human (variant if allowed) with the Actor feat, Meant to lie and talk out of his way out of anything, (backstory not decided yet)
or
Valour Bard (Half elf) Meant to be a supportive character that buffs everyone else and is the face of the party. Going to be focused on telling stories of old and performing them. Main motivation would be to go out and find new stories to have, either through talking to others and learning new stories or by being one of the heroes in the story.

Yeah, 5E does a pretty good job to make any party make up okay.
Eol, are you thinking of going High Elf for your Eldritch Knight. That would seem to work best with the reading material you provided. And I wonder if LadyDark would maybe consider houseruling a martial weapon spear that would be similar to a scimitar except piercing...
So... Thrusting Spear: 1d6 damage, finessable, thrown (20/60)
I would price the weapon at atleast 25 gp, though I don't exactly understand how the game designers priced the equipment.
Anyway, just an idea.

Undecided, really...
Given my affinity for elves, I'd say that's most likely going to be the choice I make but, really, I hadn't quite decided one way or another. I'd considered human and half-elf, as well. If I'm trying to keep as close to The Dragons of Sailiel write-up, though, High Elf would be the ticket, I think. That said, though, the Dragons were created for Audalis and I'm not entirely sure that Eilyrith would have an organization similar... *shrugs*
I like the idea of the Thrusting Spear, too... but then you said scimitar and I went "OOOOOOOOOooooooo! A scimitar!!! What spear?"

Scimitars
Well, a scimitar is super easy... and you can start with two of them if you like and they are both finessable (can sub DEX for STR for attack AND damage) and light. 1d6 damage/slashing. Pretty swell in fact.
5e has a cap of how far you can improve your ability scores (20/+5 is the cap), and it is way more restrictive on how much DEX bonus you can add to your armour.... so, Leather Armour (12+5 {max dex}) is almost equal to the most protective plate mail (18... no dex allowed).
The fact that finesse weapons allow you to add the bonus to attack AND damage rolls, combined with the above armor rules, makes a DEX-based fighter a real possibility.

Nice!
Thanks for the input Ayrn! I believe you may have swayed me away from the spear and shield idea.

Healing
If I do a druid (likely - haven't had one in a long time.) they have the goodberry spell which, if I remember correctly, allows me to basically use up an unused spell at the end of the day to make somethng like 10 berries. Each provides food for one day and heals 1 hp. So essentially I think even a druid can heal 10hp per day.

Druid Healing
The Druid does have the Goodberry spell which does create 10 berries, with each berry healing 1 HP and providing the eater with nourishment for the day. I'm not sure if a person can eat more than one berry in a 24 hr period. Lady Dark, how do you interpret the text?
The Druid also has access to the Cure Wounds spell, which can use any spell slot in order to heal one person [spell slot level used x d8] hit points.
If Impulse plays a Bard, at level 2, they also have a mechanic that lets them heal everyone 1d6 each time we rest. And the Bard also has access to the Cure Wounds spell
The fighter also has a mechanic that recovers every short rest [around 3x/day] which also them to heal themselves [1d10 + Fighter Level] hit points each time they use it. So, we might not even need to spend any resources to heal the fighter.

Goodberry
The other DM I have worked with allowed multiple goodberries to be eaten at once and I don't think the spell says you can't. I would imagine it is sort of like Merry and Pippen eating lots of lembas bread - they belch a bit but are fine. But int he end it would be up to the GM.
Rests provide healing as well, so healing takes care of itself if you can squeeze in a nap.
