Uh....Gunther..

When I get the chance in private Oriel will want to suggest to the charming young paladin in our midst that he might not want to lay it on so thick....

Were you offering fealty?
The one-true God?

Your beliefs are fine, but look at the temple - I suspect the good man does not agree on who the one-true god is. Nor for that matter might the MAYOR want to hear about a warrior building a castle and becomeing a "laird." Also, might this man even just be a servant?

Your role-playing one hell of a paladin, but relax a bit. Remember that he might not see the world through your eyes. If you get a chance to repeat this little seen, don't lay it on quite so thick.

Unless he responds postively, I guess....

Oriel ... There is a Method to My Madness ...

..... and your response here is indeed part of what the 17 year old Paladin is stirring!

For this particular scenario this is exactly what Gunther has done by design knowing full well that most of the people in Orlane worship the goddess of Agriculture as the farmer Norwell Graven has said.

This burly man may very well be a mere servant to Mayor Ormond and not actually be Mayor Ormond. Norwell did not say that Mayor Ormond was a male!

Burly man could be Mayor Ormond, could be a servant or may even well be the father of Mayor Ormond who could be a Female for that matter!

Motivation here is to disarm the skepticism and cautious fear displayed by the burly man and play upon the extreme respect for authority that Gunther employs to cut to the chase and get to the bottom line of the current problem!

Building a castle is part of what a Paladin will do with his money earned from bounty and discovering hidden treasures during the course of the adventure.

Although Gunther probably would build a castle somewhere else and not in Orlane during the course of this adventure, speaking of building a castle does convey the intent to offer protection and those who hear of this Dream/Intention can either dismiss it as humorous lunacy or as a serious plan of a young idealist.

In this particular case such a presentation may be received as a genuine offer to help someone in authority who will welcome the opportunity to allow well armed strangers to undertake the task of ridding Orlane of the mysterious happenings without trying to get the towns folk to do so.

Furthermore, if there is some type of secret society at work in Orlane and this burly man is involved in that secret society, then it gives the burly man the golden opportunity to direct us to a place where a trap is being laid to get rid of us, but plays right into our hands of what we as adventurers want to do in the first place!

Yeah - I get what Gunther is doing, I just might not lay it on so thick - nor is it in-character for Oriel.

On a side note - Oriel is all for finding traps. However, he would rather identify it ahead of time rather than have it "sprung on him." Walking into the trap they have planned is not really what he has in mind.

just some thoughts

hopefully soon i will be an offical group member. just wanted to suggest something for when we all get back together. how about the Ranger and Druid with a little muscle as support do a perimeter check around the town. their. skills in tracking and woods lore could be put IMO to better use looking for trails and signs of possible "enemy activity" on the outskirts of the town. this could be done while the more charismatic members do more interviews and fact finding.

Group 1 Gunther is not Oriel

It is in character for Gunther but not so for any other type of style and if I were role playing any other character other than a Paladin there would be an entirely different way I would approach this!

There is an outside chance [minutely slim but still an outside chance!] that Mayor Ormond could be among the recent missing as of the previous night, which would play to our advantage with this unorthodox approach I am using!

The way this plays out when Trip writes the response will either make Gunther look like a fool or a genius!

My preference is also that we know in advance of possible traps, but I suspect that sooner or later one or more groups will have to withstand a sneak attack from the Evil in Orlane!

No tracking for me

Apart from just knowing what should be here and what should not, my druid would be pretty useless to you on a perimeter check.

Though, I will say Shadowdragon has hit on a good idea of searching the town perimeter to see if anything is out of place in a sense of "hey, that plant shouldn't be growing here" or "that animal isn't indeginous to this area".

Perhaps once we finish our present tasks, that will be something to do. We have two rangers and a druid, so covering the area should be quick (never say easy )

Group 1

I hope you guys are ready to post with all this extra time granted by Trip being busy in real life!

Looks like with the delay that I may have to wait until I get home from the hockey league on Monday night to post anything further at An Evil in Orlane should Trip be able to update his storylines on Sunday evening or later!

:-/

Group 1 and the Mayor

Interesting stuff....

Oriel thinks that we should be honest with the guy int he mayors house - I don't remember the name - is it actually the mayor? We don't need to mention the merchant specifically, but say that we heard about the trouble and came to try and sort things out. If pressed we could admit the merchants involvement. But I don't think this is a guy to lie to.

I am curious about the owl. It almost seems like a lie detector or something, but I've never heard of something quite like that.

Oriel would continue to stand - sort of propped up on his longbow. Comfortable and non-threatening, but still standing. The little guys could sit down - it looks freindly and they could duck for cover quickly if needed.

So, we tell the truth and we bluntly ask questions:
What does he know about the dispapearances?
Who has gone and returned?
Who was the last group to go?
With so much happening, why is he still here?
As the mayor, what has he done about it?
Has there been any indication of violence?
What is the owl? (Ask early?)

*If everyone leaves, who stands to inherit all of the land? This may be a bad question to ask him. I almost feel like Scooby Doo trying to uncover the bad guy on this one. But I don't think the mayor is the bad guy. Maybe.

No Namby Pamby Mayor

Here is the direct quote from Trip's post:

The mayor looks the group over and smiles. "Now, why don't we begin. I will ask the first question if you don't mind. What are you and your companions really doing here in Orlane?"

***** Obviously the mayor is probably some sort of former adventurer! Kind of reminds me of those old westerns where the former gunslingers or outlaws become the sheriff or in some cases the mayor of an old west town.

If the mayor is a former adventurer, then it would stand to reason that the older gentleman with the owl has some type of divining ability. Perhaps the owl is some type of magical artifact and with owls traditionally being a type of wisdom or other occult object is nothing to trifle with.

Then again, the owl could be just an ornament or trinket and the real discerner is the old man or both.

Anyway, we should be totally honest as this encounter can either produce important allies or formidable enemies!
