Post long past due

Alright so I missed a post that was talking to me. But better late than never right?

Kyle,
Forming a publishing company is easy. In my case I simply got a logo, some business cards and declared myself king of Silver Crescent Publishing. From there comes the tough/expensive part.

For RPG books you'll need to get a hold of a layout program (I recommend Adobe InDesign CS4) unless you plan to pay someone else to do it. There are also art costs to consider (finding good and cheap artists isn't all that easy, though I had some success on deviantart.com and ifreelance.com). There are printing costs to consider and you'll have to purchase ISBN numbers (the barcode on the back of the book) which are rather expensive considering they are just numbers.

If you're just looking at novels, it is a bit easier. The only art cost you have to consider is the cover. I'm not sure about layouts. Personally I would probably still set them up in InDesign, but then again I already have the program. You would still need an ISBN number and a printer, though the printing costs would be substantially less.

Any other questions I can take months to answer?

There are others (free ones)

If you just want to typeset publications, and you are comfortable with computer languages (like C/C++, PERL, Java, etc.), you should be able to learn/understand LaTeX. It is a typesetting compiler used in the sciences a lot but can be used for anything. Problem is that there is no real GUI that you can use to shift things around. It is all done by code. Sometimes images can be difficult to place exactly where YOU want them (the code has a mind of its own there).

But for text articles, it works great.

woohoo

Nice work, my dear friends! Very nice!

I've personally no real experience in publishing, but back in the days when I was fairly active at the university, we had a course in InDesign. Nice piece of software with a major downside common to Adobe products - the price. $699

Sure!

Just don't tell me.

I already know I was one of those downloads. And a random guy I work with is another. So... yeah... not alot of response from my target audience yet... *shrug*

yeah newsletter

SO... I just got done reading the newsletter. It was great. All the articles were really good. The submissions from memebers were cool. I really loved the Audalis Games, and the classifieds. I think I might try to print out a few copies and drop them at the library or the local comic book store. Eagerly awaiting the next issue.
