@ Nimu: I don't believe that the 5e SRD website is really ready for any traffic yet, but I can send you(and anyone else) the PDF's for the Player's handbook and the Sword Coast Adventurers guide (which are all of the the player's resources right now).
As for a paladin, I am thinking of being a Paladin of the Crown, but instead of serving the corrupt current officials, he/she (depending on what I decide) seeks to rebuild a more benevolent society. Would this work?

Some general rules about char creation
Character creation is pretty simple. Pick a race, pick a class that you'd like and one thing thats in this that i noticed wasn't in 3.5 e are backgrounds. The backgrounds represent what your character was doing previously, before they did an adventure. This will determine some of your starting equipment and your proficiency with certain skills. (Skills don't exist in 5e, where you get skill points and level stuff up for instance).
Feats at level 1 aren't available unless you're playing variant human.
To get a feat, you have to trade an ASI instead.
I rolled stats for everyone (Not too bad imo), so you can use these or standard array. (15, 14, 13, 12 ,10, 8 )
16, 13, 13, 12, 11, 9
Alternatively, if enough people ask for it, you can roll for your stats. I'm less fond of this, not b/c people can cheat, more because I've been on the bad end of bad dice rolls before. (Rolled 3 1's and a 3 for 4d6 drop lowest)
If you have any questions just lemme know
Edit: @SirSadaar: Sure, oath of the crown sounds like it would definitely fit in the campaign. There are a couple of ideas that I have as to why your character would have learned of this and how it's fueling your powers

okay
I'll try to get a character thrown together asap. My weekend is a little tied up with me having my daughter this weekend, but I'll do what I can when I can. If anyone cares I'm going to be rolling a Half-Elf Rogue, so I can handle all the tricky things like locks and such, and be a striker style combatant.

NIMU - One Option
Nimu, you might want to consider the Warlock class with the Archfey patron.
You don't get a lot of spells or spell slots, but the spell slots refresh after a short rest. Additionally, the class gives you a number of Invocations (basically spell-like abilities) as you advance, along with some other cool class features.
Peace,
Ayrn

Barb
I am kind of leaning towards a totem barbarian (not sure race yet, have to see what is available). If I get the pdfs for the books I will generate a character this weekend.

Don't worry too much about getting a character in asap. I'm going on vacation w/o internet i believe from may 1st to may 15th so take your time
As for warlock, I personally love them, my first character was a warlock. Check them out in the players handbook, you might like em!
Alright keeper of dragons, barbs are cool, i have alot of ideas spinning in my head about the campaign. Looking forward to it!

srd
As mentioned earlier, there is also an SRD for those without the books or pdfs. Be forewarned it is incomplete and some information, namely backgrounds, archetypes, and sub-races, have been omitted, requiring access to books/pdfs for all the options.
And from what I have seen of your characters in the past Nimu, Archfey Warlock is probably right up your alley. (unfortunately the SRD only has details for fiendish 'locks though)

extra class, unearthed arcana
As well, I'm allowing the use of this specific unearthed arcana class, the psionic which was a class in 3.5 e I believe? Feel free to take a look at it and play it if you want. This has replaced the Mages in the god-King's cities.

Fantastique!
Thanks for all the resources and suggestions. Will look into a few different options. Leaning towards the wizard but the warlock could be interesting.
What is the starting level? 4th (the popular default of late)? 9th? 20th? 500th?
Thanks!

Starting level
I'm thinking the starting level will be at 1st level with the ability scores (or standard array) either choice you desire.
However if enough people want fourth level, we can skip to that. I'm thinking first level because we can let people learn mechanics and stuff for fifth edition. I'll just level you guys quickly up to fourth/ fifth level.

Thoughts
We seem to have a rogue, warlock (maybe, spellcaster anyway), barbarian and a ranger or two. What about healing? Normally there is always a cleric in a party. I get why there might not be in this setting, but I'm curious if the DM has any thoughts about how the party might handle the need for healing.
I'm ok with whatever level you want to do. One is fine, I tend to prefer starting fairly low so that you get to create the character. Sometimes groups start at 2 or 3 just to help survivability. But I'm fine with 1.

Levels and thoughts
I can work with whatever you want to start with. In terms of RP, I'm usually not as interested in the ingenue concept so tend to like starting a little higher (4th or 5th would be good). That said I can work with whatever you prefer.
Oh, probably going to wizard route. Nothing is set is stone yet.

Cleric
I believe we have a paladin which is plenty of plenty of healing. As well I've noticed in fifth edition, you have plenty of natural healing via hit dice.
When you take a short rest, you can heal your health up using hit dice. (Short rests are an hour in my game)
I don't know if this is applicable in 3.5 e or 4e but I read somewhere that this is one of the differences.
Nomad, feel free to play anything you like!
Edit: As for levels... What level would you guys like to be? Fighters get a really big powerspike at level 5, so I'm probably going to level you guys quickly until then.
Hmm: Taking a look at it, most classes don't have anything till level 2. So how bout we start there? Gives people arcane tradition, reckless attack and spell slots for rangers as well. Everyone good for that? You'll be slightly better than the average run of the mill beginner adventurers but nothing too powerful
Edit: number 2, extra backgrounds. As for backgrounds, since some of the default backgrounds aren't really applicable, feel free to PM me a background and we can come up with some proficiencies that might work. As well you can use a background and rename it.
I.E: Using outlander for an exile
There is slavery so there will be an escaped background. I guess I'll homebrew it? Shoot me a PM and we can work together to find a background with proficiency and background traits that work for your character

Hey there, love 5e, haven't played in a play by post game in quite a long time here, but if anyone needs, I have the entire phb in pdf format as well you can share with the players if you like.
The dark sun setting seems interesting though, and it seems like you have a good party lined up with 5 players. I'll keep an eye out and see how this progresses

^^ PLAYERS HANDBOOK
Edit: actually if you'll consider a 6th player I've got a great idea about a cleric who hides behind the guise of a medicine man (doctor background from the 5e wiki or sage background from phb) hiding his divine magic for fear of persecution. Highly morales he'll offer aid to friend or foe as the dr's code is to preserve all life etc etc

Dark Sun
Maybe I missed it in an earlier post, but is there a good place to get info on the Dark Sun setting? I don't know anything about the world to work up a background. Right now all I know is magic withers life, god-king, hidden clerics and mages and slavery.
