Curious question

I noticed that Duncan's character Thorson is a LT Commander, does that not make him superior in rank to both Eol's and my character as we are both only LT's?

Also working on my post as I write this

Time in Service

The character I created has been in Starfleet for about sixteen years; LCDR would be a fairly natural progression of rank for that time in service. As far as duties and position aboard the ship, though, Thorson is just a regular department head like the others. The extra pip doesn't afford any special privilege or position or anything, in this setting. XO is an NPC, I believe.

Eol is the XO

and I'm second officer or third in command. That's why I was asking about rank so I know how refer to you as Sir or Lt Commander.

Ok

Cool. Didn't know what has been assigned and not. You may refer to me as Grand Poobah Engineer Extraordinaire. With sprinkles. Instead of sir, call me...vibraphone.

Or Whangalepticwalrusshavings.

yep

The Chief Engineer is the second highest ranking officer on our ship. However, he is not a line officer - he is not eligible to assume command in normal circumstances.

A line officer (Captain, Executive officer, Second officer) would exert authority over a higher ranking non-line officer - but only if it's in the course of executing their duties in regard to command of the ship.

So, let's say the second officer has command of the bridge... which happens on a very regular basis, as the captain cannot keep 24 hour bridge watches.

So, the bridge operations officer of the shift notices an anomaly in the impulse engines. The second officer, currently in command on the bridge, would call down to engineering and order that the issue be investigated. If the chief engineer was on duty at the time, he would be obligated to follow the order.

Let's say we have an away team, with some junior grade lieutenant placed in charge by the captain. Everyone else in the away team would be subject to the lowly ltjg's orders for the duration of that mission.

That said, the away team scenario is pretty unlikely. Typically, the captain, XO, or 20 will be in charge of those operations, and they will hold equal or greater rank to all other potential participants aside from - again - the chief engineer. Who would again fall under the chain of command provisions.

However, in all other situations, the a junior officer (the second officer, in your questions) would be expected to observe all normal customs and courtesies. This absolutely means that the lieutenant commander would be referred to as "sir", and that proper deference is given in all non chain of command scenarios.

m/

Yeah, put Thorson in the center chair and ancient 21st-century "Viking Metal" will be piped throughout the ship. Hehehe.

Edit/Update

Natasha Pierce in Operations has been updated
Leah Finnley in Operations has also been updated
Tam Suder in Operations has also been updated

These three crewmembers are servers behind the bar in the Observation Lounge. I've listed in their bios their typical shift schedules so you know who you are likely to encounter in the Lounge.

Nice!

Natasha's description is much as I imagined it might be when I was scrawling out the post for Megan.

Also, for Silent One's benefit, I've stubbed in a Medical Dept NPC, named Ryan Bachmann who could, quite possibly, bring some modicum of internal drama to the sick bay.

As to Tochi being the XO - I just figured it was cuz I was sooooo shmexy!

Nice post, Tann!

Bringing a little of the "brown-chicken-brown-coooow" to the thread, I see.

Seriously, though, nice start!

Jealous

I just want to throw this in as you begin your adventure into places where no man has gone before - I'm very jealous of your beginning adventure. I had too many irons in the fire to join this one, but if later an opening ever emerges, keep me in mind.

I will leave you to your own thread now, but have fun. It looks really cool!

Oh My Head.........

I was going to help Tann and put a bit of a post BUT I make a bit of a mistake.

We went for Mexican to celebrate my new job and after three pitchers (not beer) ...well just a bit dull.... I'll try something soon to help Tann.
