this is a throw back
I don't think I'll need any help generating my character. I have the concept very solid in my mind, however the time is a completely different matter. I hope I can get something started this weekend, I know I can have something finished by the new year as requested (I believe), I just have to make the final touches to the man who has been floating along in my imagination and then I will begin the long, laborious, and masochistically enjoyable process of putting him on paper.
Looking forward to it!

Exit side door
Dog saw the dislike in the face of the one called Alacrity. Dog knew that may times fallowing that look came the harsh side of a boot, so he quickly tucked tail and moved away. As he did so he found something, ‘Oh look, how wasteful one of those humans. One of them dropped a nice bit of bone,’ sniff sniff, ‘and there is a bit of meat left on it.’ Dog quickly snatch up the bounty he found and slipped out the side door.

Mage in Progress
Just so you know - my mage is in progress. With holidays and such I won't get Desiderius finished right away, but should be able to easily beat any January deadline. If you need something before then let me know. I can always adjust priorities. But it is in progress.

Not a problem
He will be human correct? Anyway I am still working on the end of december as finalized character day. I may post the beginning of the game before then but combat won't be immediate.
btw - Do you understand the mana system as I described it?

Huzzah!
What a great group this is shaping up to be. Better watch out Al, we're coming for ya! In all seriousness though, I'm very excited to see this make progress and I can't wait for it to get underway.

Opinions please
In starting this adventure, I can go two routes
1) Adventure starts as you arrive in town, late night, tired from long journey. You find inn, bed down for the night and when you awake, you realize something has happened
2) Game starts right outside castle/dungeon. The backstory is told as a narrative (you saw this, he told you this) and you start into the adventure immediately.
1 gives you more time to interact with each other and townsfolk. 2 skips that and goes to the meat of the adventure. I am leaning towards 2 right now because I tend to lose party members if the start is too long. However this group is shaping up well and might enjoy the preamble.
Thoughts?

I have faith!
Well I've always been one for long-winded introductions that amble their way towards an adventure while all the characters interact. Basically, I'm leaning towards 1. I think 2 is probably safer and more likely to keep players interested HOWEVER this group seems very solid, and not too likely to flake out without notice. Not to mention you have 7 players and the preamble may actually give an indication of who will be able to commit to the adventure once it gets started. I think in the long run the first option lends to better party dynamics and a more fun adventure, if you can make it that far. And I believe.

1 more...
Here's a question for everybody, how do we want to work equipment. I figure if we've been adventuring together once already it would make sense that we together own a lantern, rope or what have you. I know Alacrity didn't want us fussing about equipment too much so we don't have to make a big deal about this or anything, I'm more concerned that in my attempt to keep my character safe, as he will be charging into battle &c..., I am clean outta cash and won't be able to pay for some of these adventuring essentials. Armour and clothing'll cost you a mint, I've learned.

equipment
Never in the years that I have played this game have I ever found equipment haggling to be fun. Equip your characters as you see fit based on what they are, what level they have attained and the background you give me. if you have to spend 30 gp more than the imit to make yourself say - Now that's my character!, then take the gold and run. If you cross a line, I will tell you (that gold plated cook pot has to go).
Furthermore, you did clean out a goblin lair and got some reward so there is leeway. When you start the game you will have spent most of the reward, but you could and did spent some of it on equipment. I just want everyone to start without magic, as Audalis is a low magic, high realism world.
I assume that if someone is a fighter, he will have armour and weapon, a backpack, a few sacks, something to sleep on, and under, a few torches, a flask of oil, fresh undies, rope etc. If you want a small mirror and a lantern, go ahead. I have never seen the boss villian die at the end due to a lantern and mirror combo yet.
If you ask me for mastercraft plate armour with turtle wax inhibitors on your low class born warrior - I will say no.
At the start of this adventure you all have horses or ponies for the vertically challenged. They come with saddle, saddlebags, and shoes before anyone asks.

Hey look... I can post on this thread too!
I'm here... I promise and have been silently following along. Two things...
When are we getting an nice official Q&A for this? I am currently refusing to post up any info on my character (including the pretty pic I just finished up) until we are in Q&A.
And Tann... would you like to borrow my step daughter's copy of 'Typing with Timon and Pumba' so you can even out the finger work required for this website?

How to start
I lean a bit towards #1 but with a one week only period to pst al the backstory stuff. That way RP can occur if wanted but doesn't take forever.

The Mage
Yes, he is human. Desiderius Obrovakt, is the anticipated name.
I haven't reread the whole mana thing, so no, at the moment I don't understand, but if it is posted in this thread I suspect I can figure it out.
As for the opening, I am open to either, although I wouldn't object to just getting it going. I like the openings, but have had several games disappear before anything really happened. Whatever, your the DM/GM, do what you want.
Edit: Ok, read up on mana - makes sense. No problem there, this is more or less what I always did. Do you use the role to see if a mage can know a spell and limit the number per level he might be able to know? Do you have any limit of what spells my guy has in his book to begin with?

spells
You can take any spell listed in the PHB/ToM not restricted by specialization. There is a spellbook in the vault that you can download. You don't have to roll to see if you know them. You do not need to take read magic - that is assumed.
You get 5 spells in your book if you are first level and then 2 more for second for a total of seven. Now there is another spell caster in the group so I will allow you to "swap" two spells each (so you should have a total of 9 spells in your book, at least two the same as the other caster). Does that make sense?
Hold that thought - We may have lost the loremaster.
