Dreamgirls
Yeah, that's right... we watched Dreamgirls. And we didn't even feel like it.
The thing was: I was in the videostore and called Fantasy with her cell that I use mostly. We had seen all the big things we needed to see, f.i. 'the prestige' (GREAT movie), so I named some titles that we hadn't seen yet. She wanted to see 'Norbit' (just out of curiosity), and I didn't feel like any of the left-overs. So I pick the DVD from the shelf, go to the counter, pay, get in my car, and drive back home.
Halfway, I look at the Norbit DVD to discover that I picked the wrong one. I was stupified... Dreamgirls was smiling up at me from the passenger seat.
... we decided to watch it anyway.
I really didn't get what the big deal is about that movie. It starts out like your typical bio-pic, but not that bad at all. But it goes wrong rapidly. The support actress was nominated for an Oscar, but for what? For singing better than Beyonce, probably. Because her acting wasn't that special at all, or at least not so special that she deserved nomination.
The songs weren't so great, the acting wasn't so great, the whole movie wasn't so great.
Don't waste your time on it.

A small rant
just a wee one to point all the movies i have been bitterly disappointed by and the two i have been enamoured with this year.
Simpsons Movie - Ghey
Shrek 3 - Ghey
Die Hard 4 - Ghey
Rush Hour 3 - Ghey
Now onto the good films, the ones that redeemed the film industry from being compeltely shot for life
POTC 3 : AWE
Hot Fuzz - Pure freaking genius
And the BIGGEST suprise of 2007...*drum roll*
Transformers - its the seminal cartoon/robot series of my generation (cue the 80's cartoon theme tune) and when i heard it was being made by Michael Bay, well my heart sank, after some of the ghey-arse pieces ofcrap he's churned out...wlel my hopes were not high for Transformers...
but "£$%*(!£" i have never been morewrong about a film...it was THE most awesome spend of two hours in a cinema in the history of me going to the dang places
Edit (by Almerin): though it's good to be passionate about something, I have changed some of your language to keep it 'Parent-friendly', you know? You're free to change my alterations to suit you better.

Dreamgirls
Yes, Almerin said it all, except one thing: The singing of the 'Effie' chick was beautiful (the girl Almerin was talking about that got nominated for the oscar). But then again, i'm a fan of enormous, powerful, heavenly, black-woman voices
Oh and about her acting. It was fine, but we see it allll the tiiimmmee. Nothing new. It's a typical personality role.
Man, was Eddie Murphy annOYING. I can't believe they picked him and actually had him SING. >_<

Pan's
Just rented Pan's Labyrinth, an Italian foreign film praised for its special effects. While they were good, it wasn't quite what I was expecting, though nevertheless good.
The Nazi-era style reminded me of Life is Beautiful (another Italian film from a couple years ago).
Also, as my father pointed out, its quite similar to the Christian version of the story of the son of God.

Stardust
Jut got back from seeing Stardust and I have to say, the critics were right: this is the new Princess Bride. Magical, whimsical, stirring, funny and visually beautiful.
I won't spoil anything with the plot here, but I have to say that Robert DeNiro is one brave fellow

Pan's Labyrinth is Spanish, not Italian.
I found it to be quite awesome.

stardust
Gotta expand on Vanadia's brief line:
This is one of the two or three best movies I have seen in the past several years. I had been looking forward to it, but only because I enjoy fantasy; I figured it would have its moments, but mainly be remarkable for the special effects, or for a funny line or two.
I was wrong!
This movie feels fresh and original - none of the same old recycled stuff. I caught myself several times through the movie thinking "Wow! This movie is amazing!"
DeNiro had me in stitches, no doubt - he was HUGE in the movie. But the whole concept was amazing... and the ghostly brothers were a super touch, IMO.
If you call yourselves a fan of the fantasy genre - or of good movies in general - see Stardust.

Besides...DeNiro is good....

yep...
...it's that good. Got some mushy romantic stuff, sure, but not as heavy as the Prince's Bride - ideal date movie, my friend.

finished
just finished watching 1408, and it was indeed highly enjoyable for a scary movie. Movie is better than the book in this case actually. Lots of scary moments, and more 'terrible' at time than f.i. Saw II and III. Where the latter show everything explicitly, 1408 does not have gore, but a more psychological kind of horror mixed with good-old scary moments.
