Shield

I assumed you were trying to cast the spell from a covered position (which would have meant through the window) since there is little to know cover on the roof top. For the sake of argument I will allow you to be on the roof if you so choose.

In the future I will try to keep everyone's position (when I don't due a tactical map) more organized. I apologize for all of this.

Ladder

I thought Argent and some of the slaves had used the ladder to get down already. Perhaps with the mix up, that was never resolved.

Nope

Argent and the slaves that already got down jumped the 10' to the ground. The only ladder you've used is the one you detached from the interior of the warehouse which was used to get the slaves up onto the second floor.

So, everyone on the ground the far has jumped. There are those among the slaves, however, which will be unable to do that (particularly small children and those carrying infants).

Are the archers within 30 ft of Thiferl?

Yes they would be assuming you are standing about the center of the roof. The archers are about 20 feet from the road-side of the office section you are currently standing on. I really don't want to do the math since you are on a different level so... yes... yes they are.

Echo's Answer

The melee is occuring twenty-five feet down the alley way to your right. The gathering of slaves is between you and the melee. There is an alley that leads between two buildings leading away from the warehouse, towards the glassworks. You are not all that familiar with the back alleys of the city, but you would likely assume that the network of alleys could lead you in the general vacinity of the "drop off point."

Apologies

I apologize for not getting a game update in this week. I have been very sick so it has limited what I can do. I'll get one in this weekend and we'll start back up on our normal schedule. Thanks for your patience.

Letter of the law

So I'm still having trouble separating player knowledge from character knowledge about how "I" feel about slavery. Thiferl would probably feel better if this stock were born slaves and raised that way and didn't know another life. But that's not what the case sounds like. He's got a couple more heals, so a thought crossed my mind about following the letter of the law, and physically cutting the patches of skin that held the mark on and healing everybody so they'd have a scar where their tattoo was. But I don't know the culture of the land where in, and if someone's a slave, maybe that's just too bad, sucks to be you, glad I'm not a slave. Anyway, Thiferl is battling his inner demons, perhaps a little more information about slavery in this land would be helpful.

Slavery

In Calatain slavery is legal. Thus removing the brand and freeing slaves you haven't paid for would be punnishable as theft (the severity would be determined by the number of slaves and the value of each slave). Also, there aren't that many slaves who would willingly let you cut off a chunk of flesh, even if you say you can heal it. The pain would still be excruciating, and beyond the tolerance of many of these slaves.

Some slaves are born into bondage. Others are captured in raids and sold. Others are sold into slavery to pay for their crimes (like the aforementioned theft...).

Not all slaves are treated badly. After all, if you owned a really nice car it would still be your property, yet you would treat it VERY well. That is just an example to put things in perspective. Some masters are cruel like you first think of when you think of slavery. Others are not.

Does that give you a better feel for it? If not, perhaps more direct questions might help me explain a bit better.

Alright, no more putting it off

Ok guys, it's discussion time. We no longer have time to delay the topic at hand: Slavery.

What are we going to do with these slaves?

Argent, for his lawful part, should abide the law and take them to their master.
But, he is also good, and according to these slaves, and judging by their reaction, they are NOT happy in their current employment. This is not really a matter of following the law because laws are made by men, and men can be wrong. It's like allowing child prostitution and saying: hey, it's legal, so what can I do?
So, my position in this is hereby officially this:
We free these people and make up the best excuse for having them 'escape our grasp'. We're level 1 for crying out loud. People in the guild won't expect much of us newbs.

So, reaction please. We need to figure out what to do.

slavery

as Uthgar is a slave, he would vote not bringing him in... then again, he would just sod off if the party decided to go through with it. I also know that as a character, he has no say in it, so this is entirely OOC.

BTW, he really does not care what you guys do with 'the others'.

PS: are we not 2nd level newbs?

Tough decisions

Unlike his brother Thiferl is Chaotic Neutral. So on both alignment spectrums he shouldn't have trouble with returning the slaves to their "rightful" master. On the other hand, he cares deeply for his brother and therefore his opinions. So if Argent makes a big stink about it, Thiferl will back his brother up. But if the group decides to return the slaves, Thiferl wouldn't morally have a problem with that.
