It'll be a while if i'm learning a new system before we can have a full game day due to my being in school now unfortunately...

I read the full supernatural rpg codex/cortex system which we can use but personally I feel like it'll be much more limited than the WoD system. I'll do a bit of reading as I"d like to have maybe more options than just plain humans, perhaps humans with a bit of a supernatural edge? So i'll take a look at hunter: the vigil.

If anyone has anything they'd like to contribute, I'd be happy to take suggestions

http://www.danicat.com/nwod/nWoD/Hunter%20-%20The%20Vigil/Hunter%20-%20The%20Vigil.pdf

This is the pdf! Feel free to take a look at it though I don't expect you to read teh entire thing as I haven't read it yet either

update

Hey all! Turns out I have more time on my hands than i originally thought, I'm about ~110 pages into the handbook so I expect a tentative game day of about ~2-3 weeks if that's okay with everyone. I'm hoping it'll be earlier (which it might be) but I want a nice long range so that way if something comes up I won't have to disappoint anyone.

As of now I'm a bit unclear of who's playing right now so when you have the chance if you could just lemme know, I'd like to see how many people i can expect.

As well, I'll post a bit of a more comprehensive char creation sometime this weekend - mid next week. I don't wanna make you guys read the handbook just to play:p

Additionally, if you guys could just lemme know what you'd like from this game, looking for rp opportunities,a dungeon crawler or like a horror game that gives you goosebumps. This part isn't required, I just like asking the players what they expect, ((This goes both ways so if you absolutely hate something like killer clowns for instance, lemme know and i'll stay away from them))

Have a good weekend all!

Pretty cool!

I've started reading the pdf... barely scratched the surface, yet, really, but it's a pretty awesome set-up.

pdf

Yea the pdf is pretty hefty, super fun to read! I have a lotta time waiting for the bus so that's when I do most of my reading hehe,

Really excited to get this started! If any of you have a char concept in mind, lemme know and i'll keep an eye out while reading

EDIT:

One thing I'd like to stress, reading the pdf isn't required, I'll give the basics of char creation and I can handle the mechanics for you, You just have to tell me who you want your char to be and i'll be the one to do the sheet, you guys still make the choices but you don't have to know the rules and such per say.

THe pdf is there just in case you want to read it!

Time frame

Are we looking at this game being set in the "modern-day" or are we era-hopping (i.e. 60', 70's, 80's)?

I've got an idea or two as far as character-type, at the moment, but haven't decided on one over the other, yet. Once I do, I'll be sure to let you know.

Also, I prefer a more RP-oriented type of game as opposed to dungeon crawls but am flexible depending on what other players might prefer...and YES to super-spine-tingling horror!

Oh, a character

ah, let me think.

Female, of course, and maybe some kind of tech person, you know helps build or design things to destroy the evil, horrible things in the world.

I too prefer the RP oriented game, a lot of combat constantly would definitely turn me off. I mean it is ok when needed but I don't want every situation be a struggle for survival.

I'm in!

I've a concept for a character from ages back. I'm with Eol, I prefer the RP style of play, character-building, interaction, solving problems, etc.

The concept I have is a Freemason Biker with a penchant for scholarly interests but a forced history of brawny, violent resolutions. And, I will read the PDF because I like to get that involved and I absolutely love this show.

I'm in

for starters, as I said I really am open to whatever the DM throws at us in terms of system or general style. In a game like this I would hope to do a lot of writing/roll-playing. But I would normally just do that and fit it into the combat, explorations and general freaking out. (Running around and yelling, "Scooby Doo! Where are you!" and all that . . . hey, can I have a dog? A big great dane?) So whether or not you make it a dungeon crawl or an RP narrative I'll do some RP. I suspect we want some of both, but consider me flexible. There is a point at which getting lost in puzzles gets hard - especially when we are trying to do communication on message boards with once every 3 days post from some people. (Not complaining about that, it is just in the nature of the beast. Yeah, that beast. The one that will be haunting us. Anyway...) so at least some dungeon crawling might be good.

As for a character - I'm probably thinking some kinda academic sort of fellow. I'm not sure about much more. Could be a grad student. Could be a young prof. Could be someone a bit older that has had experiences. Not sure yet. But a nice sports coat with elbow patches. Always wanted one of those. Maybe kinda crazy curly red hair.

I'll try to glance at the pdf so I have a clue about what a character is, but no promises.

cool!

Looks like we're leaning more towards a rp oriented game with a bit of combat which makes sense. Combat over play by post can get tedious if that's all we do.

As for the time period, I'm thinking it'll be mordern, 2000's at least, probably 2010's.

As for setting, I'm thinking I'm gonna use Toronto as its something im most familiar with and as well it has a nice balance between total downtown with towering buildings and nice quiet towns, suburban areas.

I'll have a map later!

I've gotten through a lot of the pdf and I'm liking it a lot, i'll post char creation summaries sometime,

Mechanics if anyone wants to know is the game uses only d10s. A lot of them. When you wanna do something, you have to pick the stat and skill that makes sense, (picking a lock = dexterity + larceny)

The "dots" you have in that combination determines the amount of dice you roll, for example 4 dex and 3 larceny equals 7 dice rolled, a success is a 8-10, and if you roll a 10 you can reroll it and keep a success.

Concerning everyone's experience setting, for the simplicity for both of our sakes, you guys will be at the first tier. Minimal or no practical knowledge of the supernatural, if you know of supernatural things, it's either through word of mouth, someone taught you or research through text.

I have a basic premise in my mind so I'm very excited and to be honest i'm hoping to get this game started by next week but i think that's too optimistic

Char creation details will be posted later this weekend - this wednesday! Thanks for being patient guys

EDIT: Also nice picture! Thanks for letting me know general char concepts too, I'll work to incorporate them in the story.

Also! I don't know if this is common but if anyone knows about the plot point variant in DnD, I like rolling with that.

I don't actually keep track of plot points but at anytime you create something about the world and determine pre existing relationships, events, or memories without consulting me.

So it sounds complex but it's pretty simple.

Say in this situation, a group of hunters are hunting a supernatural creature and they discover their weapons aren't able to be used against it.
One of the players can look at their background and say to themselves. (Say he's a student and he has a prof that studies the occult). "I know a guy who might be able to help us, His name is Dr.Washburn. Or was Doctor Washburn. He ain't a doctor no more.".

With this, you could spring that on me at anytime and I'll roll with it, it could even go further into NPC neighbours or something like a room mate.

It's a bit complex but I like it because you can interject a bit of backstory and especially, you can determine pre existing relationships.

I'll trust you guys not to abuse stuff

Concept...

...of the concepts I've been toying with, I'm leaning towards a "stoner street kid" type. Not necessarily a "gang banger" but just some streetwise, pick-pocket, possibly homeless, loser/slacker type. *nods*

Playing around with details but that's it in a nutshell.

sounds cool!

I'm liking the variety between the char concepts, I'm open to having anything played!

For the basic premise of the game, I've been thinking about this, lemme know if it suits your character or if I should come up with a new one.

((Btw am i allowed to swear?))

"Life is simple. Well. Relatively. You did your stuff and nobody bothered you, (job, drugs, crime, w/e). It was reasonably good. Now, for the past couple weeks, there's been a string of bad luck. Accidents happening, people getting sick, some people just abandoning their "post" just to drink, f**k and do drugs. (Either job, role as a leader or perhaps people in the faith community). I think this is all because of the Stranger. I've caught a glimpse of em, tall, uses a cane and has a white suit. Ahole shows up, then all of a sudden something happens. It happened to _____ ((you can decide what happens and who it happens to)). But the weirdest thing of it all... I swear. For a second, out of the corner of my eye, the guy had horns and his skin was red. Made me shudder. Still does in fact.

I've told some people but they don't believe me. They give me weird looks. But I know something weird is up... I've heard that some others have been seeing the stranger too. Maybe I should pay them a visit"

Aight so that's what I'm thinking the basic premise of this will be. In order for that to work, your character would have to care about someone or something (Maybe you had the bad luck/accident happen to you). Furthermore you would have to care enough to report it.

I like this because it explains the zero experience you guys would have with the supernatural and it allows you to invest something into the world (i.e. You care about your town and now some supernatural entity is doing something to it)

Also, you can change how your character feels about the situation, I'm not telling your char how he/she feels. As long as your char has a vested interest, perhaps he/she wants to get revenge.

char sheet

Hey all, I finally went looking for a char sheet so if you'd like to just take a look at this,

I'm thinking of saving them to a drop box bin as they're interactive and you guys can just access your char sheets from there. I'll do some more toying around with them first!

Hmmm

So we aren't starting as hunters then? I guess I assumed our characters were already working at it. Hmmm

up to you guys!

If that's how you'd like to go, we can totally do that, everyone is a hunter already and what not, you guys could've hunted together or something.

The reason why I did this is to explain for the lack of experience on your part, ((That is to say, I'm assuming most of you don't know the WoD rules and hunter: the vigil setting). I sure as heck don't have a lotta experience as well either

IF you'd like, we can have this be the first starting event, then you guys can play with this until it's resolved, then we can time skip it to whatever experience level you'd like.

It's just so that the both of us can get used to a new learning system But if you guys just wanna jump right into it, fine by me!

Your the GM

It's your game so whatever you want is what goes.

Personally, I would prefer one where the group was already established and worked together. But I would like to hear the other potential players thoughts. In the end it is up to the GM what he does.
