Biding my time

Hello, everyone. I am officially in. As I will be arriving at the school Tuesday morning...I am waiting to make my post when the game gets to that point. Good luck with the training fight.

Alright... we are all learning here :)

Steelight:

Unarmed Strike +3 (1d6+1 damage) - how does this work if you are using daggers?

Tus:

We are going to have to limit your actions some. You can't cast four spells and shoot a crossbow in one round. We usually post one round worth of actions and sometimes explain what we might do in the second round if our actions work out the way we would like at the bottom. So if you would like to do the ice spell first and then plan on using the cross bow next round that works fine

I am also reviewing char sheets as I have time so you might notice a PM in your box when I finish it. I'll get to the rest of your posts and any questions I have concerning them soon. Hopefully we can get this bit of training moving foreward here very soon!

M.

Not using daggers

I'm not using daggers. The Versatile Strike feat allows me to make my unarmed attacks bludgeoning, piercing or slashing. Knife Hand is a hand attack technique (unarmed) that would be considered a piercing attack. (same attack and damage rolls, just piercing instead of bludgeoning, that's the only difference.)

OPPS

Guess I miss read the players handbook I would like to use ray of frost first then fire off the crossbow second round and for third round throw the darts. BTW I think I only used two spells cause the mage hand can't be used(already used it) and ray of frost is a ranged spell.

edit
I would like to summon the lower level fiend third then fourth throw the darts

Combat?

So is Tann updating the combat part or is Meri? Who should I start harassing?

Sheesh

Real life taking precedence? What sort of world are we living in now?!? Sheesh. Np Tann. No rush, just a playful push.

Confused

Alright so Tann says we needed team work
But questions I have is first how was I affected and shield wolf wasn't I was in the back.
Secound are you saying that the only way to attack these bugbears was a ranged weapon attack. cause I don't think the MM says that bugbears only can be harmed by ranged weapons.
I mean punching a bugbear is probably not a good idea and trying to hide in a wide open field isn't ether but our magic should have done more

Also confused

Are we playing with rules or not? Technically a bugbear could not grapple and throw me in a single round. I would get an action int he new round to attempt to escape the grapple. Similar points could be brought up about every one of these situations surrounding each student.

So, I ask again, are we playing using the rule system, or just random posting with results preplanned and truly beyond our control in every sense? And if that is all of the "teaching" we get, perhaps I need to go back and change the amount of respect my character would have for our combat instructor.

Ack!

Alright... calm down everyone. I'm going to take another look at this.

Give Tann some slack please... he's just gotten out of the hospital and probably not feeling that great. When I get a chance today I'm going to look into the combat sequence a little more deeply and see if anything looks like it needs some adjustment.

We will probably move on from this combat after this and go into a little writing exercise I thought up for you all and then move into Tuesday if that is alright with everyone.

Like I have said before, this is kind of a learning experience for all of us so just be patient...

Thank you,

M.

Explanation

Ok I do alot of my combat scenes through die rolls based on character stats and abilities. As I am unfamalier with 3rd/3.5/4th Edition rules I did adlib a bit to give the whole post some excitement.

No one took damage and no one was really hurt as it was all a teaching session. Remember you guys are lower LvL Students being teached by high LvL teachers do you really think the outcome was not determined in advance . Some of the die rolls I did went against you and some went for you I apologize for any confusion on your part as well as on mine and hope to do better by you the players in any future posts

My complaint

Tann, my complaint was simply this, as an example.

For the bugbear to do what he did to me the following would have needed to occur.

1) He was knocked to his knees (effectively prone).
2) He would have needed to stand up (move action that provokes an attack of opportunity, a free atack by me).
3) He would have needed to successfully grapple me (A standard action that also provokes an attack of opportunity unless he had the Improved Grapple feat).
4) He would have to have a particular feat to throw me and, even assuming he had that feat doing so would also be a standard action.

Since you only receive 1 move action and 1 standard action per round, he couldn't have possible done all of these. I can point out flaws like this in the circumstance surrounding almost every character. Remember, not all of us were 1st level charactes.

I also wish to respectfully point out that we were organizing rather well considering we have never fought together before, but since we had all of 6 second (1 round) to act before we were all suddenly defeated there wasn't much opportunity to do anything, let along show teeamwork. And if you are going to teach, then teach. i say this again respectfully, but just saying "Teamwork next time" in a situation where we had no opportunity to form a team or really do much of anything isn't effective. It is frustrating to those familiar with the mechanics of the game and not very helpful to those trying to learn the mechanics or the whole posting thing in general.

As Meri said, we are all learning here, but I just wanted to post my thoughts. No offense intended if I conveyed them incorrectly (since you can't exactly tell tone through a post).

Assignment...

Alright boys and girls...

I have decided to leave the combat training bit as it is. However, we have noted the players concerns over how it went and will strive to improve this on the next go around.

In the light of the game, and really all gaming here, I feel it is best to let it stand and simply move forward. Getting too tied up on particular rules and instances of something not going the way we would like clogs up a game and often destroys it more than it helps. Noting your concerns is certianly acceptable, encouraged in fact, but now it is time to move on.

I would like to take a brief pause, however... and thank you all for still respecting each other in your posts about this. That helps to build an environment here at the Inn where we all feel comfortable and want to continue to play. So... give yourselves a pat on the back for that...

Now... continuing on!

You will notice that I've posted a very short post for everyone. (Except our newest student, and just hold on I'll get to you in a minute dear )

This week I would like you all to work on a dream sequence. Take your character from the field to dinner or straight to their room as you see fit, have them contemplate the day and then I would like them to all go to sleep and dream something.

I rather enjoy doing dream sequences myself and I think that this exercise will provide you with some interesting feedback into your own character. One of the delightful aspects of playing here compared to a tabletop is the ability to really delve into your character, to focus on the Role Play aspect instead of just the combat scenes.

For style... please put the dream part of your post in italics and bracketed by the special characters below.

EXE:

She watched the candle flicker and did not even realize that she had fallen asleep.

~*~

The candle must have been doused, she thought to herself. Perhaps by the water. She could hear the water, hear it dripping but in the darkness she could not determine from where it came. Blindly she reached out with her hands trying to find her way...
~*~

With a loud crash she fell to the floor.
