Computer Games

Well, I now have a brand new computer, and I'm just itching for a good game to put on there. I have medieval 2 total war, but it actually is TO good, and also Never Winter Knights 2, but also I need a better video card. So I went and installed my "Pool of Radiance: Ruins of Myth Drannor" game. Now I know it's crappy, and very boring, but I didn't realize HOW boring until I went and read some reviews about it. I read about some horrible glitches, and I'm scared to even uninstall it now. But I'm just going to get rid of it and install my Icewinddale 2 game. I never have beaten it so it should be fun. So with that, I leave the question and rest of the talking to you all. Have any of you run into some HORRIBLE rpg attempts, and also if you have ever run into some really good ones?

*laughs*

I liked Pool of Radiance and the 'whole party' perspective. In fact I may jst have to reinstall it again for kicks.

.

I really don't like it because of how restricting the whole game is on race, class, and just everything else that makes DnD fun.

Hmmm... interesting topic...

If we're gauging computer games based on level/class/race restrictions, though, I'd have to say that there has yet to be a computer RPG that comes anywhere close to the 'freedom' you might find in a 'house rules,' tabletop, pen and paper RPG right out of the box (and, of course, there are the obligitory glitches, bug fixes, patches, etc)... buuuuuuut... that said, most 'decent' RPGs these days include those groovy 'toolsets' and add-ons that, with a bit of work (and, in some cases, a few hours/days/weeks immersed in tutorials and such) can be tweaked to fit your personal preferences... Neverwinter Nights' Aurora Toolset, for example. It didn't exactly make it easy for folks to create and/or modify classes, races, etc, but it can be done if you've got the time, energy, and patience to do such things.

That said, I can't think of any RPG that I've played that I would say truly 'blew chunks'... I'm sure there were, at least one or two that I started playing and thought... YAAAAWWWWWNNN... but, mercifully, the gaming gods have seen fit to strip those offensive titles from my mind.

Pool of Radiance was kind of 'iffy', IMO, but not a horrible game to play. Like Kaelyn, I enjoyed the 'entire party' perspective...

Diablo was fun but once you played through it once, it kind of lost it's luster... not a whole lot of 'replay' value there, I thought (but, man, was the necromancer cool!)...

Computer or Console

As far as computer games are concerned, Baldur's Gate was really fun for its time, and Neverwinter Nights as well, but I grew bored with both rather quickly. For the console, Oblivion IV has held my attention for the better part of a year now.

I have to agree with Eol, though. Nothing out there comes close to comparing to a tabletop game with friends.

On a side note: Rock Band has been my addiction as of late. One of the best all out cooperative options available in my humble opinion.

ASCIIng for games, huh?

Can always point to my old standby of Angband (& a few of its variants), and I'm trying to wrap my brain around Dwarf Fortress...
