I

I just believe differently.

I have long debates with myself at night, and the things I have come up with are as follows:

1. A person can shape his or her reality.
2. Reality isn't definite
3. Noone really knows what reality is.

It's kind of like the question "is the apple really red, or is it just red because you've been taught it's red?"

Really?

Well, how's about you shape your reality while I shape your hand with a hammer, and we'll see which one worls better? Something tells me you're so confident in your conclusions as you might like us to believe.

Okay.

I am confident in what I believe.

But I'm not gonna say I'm right and you're wrong.
That's just disrespect. And according to my personal doctrines, Reality is to you what you say, it is to me what I say, it's what everyone thinks it is, but yet noone truly knows.

I disagree completely

If it's disrespectful to point out when someone is wrong, then education is the most disrespectful enterprise ever. Sorry, but we can't both be right about this, and there's an easy way to find out which one it is.

In short, I'd bet a large sum of money that your confidence ends where my hammer begins.

"Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away."

I tend to agree with Ryst on this one.

We perceive things differently. That doesn't change the reality of the situation only our view of it.

I’m putting my money on the hammer

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I put forth a question years ago ( to whom, or what is not important) The question was... Is there ONE truth?
The answer I received was : "There IS one truth and that is there are only perceptions"
"There IS one truth and that is there are only perceptions"
Have to say, I'm a fan of that statement. It allows for all these differing veiws, and wonderfully points out that not one of us has the whole answer. When it all boils down we (people) are tiny little specs in this universe, and we know absolutely nothing (big picture nothing, we know a lot about the little picture stuff). It's pretty humbling and freeing.
Education
Yes, I hate the act of education. But it is a necessary thing. But in my eyes, reality is different than what elements make up salt. Yes, the hammer will shape my bones. Yes, it will hurt. But I believe perceptions can alter our reality.
I tried
Well I try to stay away from philosophy because it's so subjective, but this has gone around a bit.
I tend to philosophize with a hammer like Nietzsche. I think philosophers are all making a big error in assuming that a) they can ever really know anything and b) what they think they know is right because they think it so.
Every single one of us could see things differently. But we are all seeing the same things. We could all perceive pain differently, but that doesn't mean that Rys isn't causing us all pain with a hammer.
The biggest problem with philosophy is that we are trying to explain divine and natural things using a man-made system of communication. I have a German degree, and have read some of Götzen-Dämmerung and the English translations out there don't do it justice.
Language is always subject to interpretation - even English. How do we define "Perception" anyway? How do we define "Pain" even? We all have different things that we perceive and associate with the words Perception and Pain. Hell Plato spent an entire book trying to define Πολιτεία - we call it Republic in English.
We can't philosophize properly until we develop telepathic communication and can start communicating directly with each other's minds.
Hmm
Well we can all be thankful that we're not connected to each other's heads purely on account of looking at some of the people here.
