rules question

If a spellcaster doesn't move in a round, can he/she trade the move action for a second standard action and cast a second spell in a round?

(that is of course referring to two spells requiring a standard action to cast.)

can't seem to find the answer to this anywhere. found something in the 3.5 SRD that Aludes to this but doesn't solidly confirm it.

it does of course depend on the dm

Usually I'd agree with Grugg, no he can't but there's always the special cases for example if a 10th level caster casts magic missile and wants to cast light chances are this spellcaster is talented enough to quickly deploy 2 easy spells. But generally between getting all the stuff out to cast the spell, concentrating, trancing, casting, and retaking in their surroundings a mortal doesn't have the mental fortitude or energy to cast that fast. After all you barely think to walk but you have to concentrate on even a cantrip usually.

.

Normally, you can't. On the other hand, you might ask your DM if he/she is willing to allow it as a houserule (in which case I'd say you'd need to give something up extra). Really, it is up to your DM but it is not allowed in the RAW.

Casting is a standard action. You get a standard, a move, and a swift every round.

Standard > Move > Swift

You can trade down, for example you can move twice. But you can't standard twice. Otherwise fighters would be attacking twice.

There are metamagic feats that let you do it.

I was just about to mention the Quicken Spell feat myself, with this feat you can technically cast 2 spells in one round, and I think there is a twin spell feat or something like that if I recall correctly, but that's more 2 of the same spell cast at the same time than it is 2 spells in a round.

There are also a few (very few) spells that have a casting time of one swift action, you could technically cast one of those spells and then a standard spell.

Thanks for all the input! helps a lot. Been spoiled by video games and PBP for a year and a half and surprised by how much I've forgotten.
