D&D 5e

So, Wizards of the Coast annonced that they are working on the next generation of D&D. I'm assuming that they won't call it 5e, but that's what it will be.

I'll be interested to see if they continue down the path of the pen and paper version of the MMORPG, which is what 4e has always felt like to me.

Of course, I'm a D&D fossil... what do I know?

I was a level 12 elf once.

I have an extreme lack of knoledge of what they're planning over in the mad scientists lab at Wizards of the Coast, and I don't really care all that much. I lost my faith in them when they kept up with fourth. I'm fine with my AD&D 2nd and the occasional pathfinder game.

I'm not gonna lie though... some part of me is a little curious about it.

df

I'd be a lot more inclined to listen to their offers of new game systems if all their press releases were done in the manner of 80s rap.

All of my money.

2e

For those of you still playing 2e, there is an alternate coming soon.

Myth and Magic
For a basic flip through, I like what I see and it keeps the old rule system going and viable to new players.

It has a few reactions already.

Hehe

I stopped complaining about editions, basically. A few months back, I got tired of always being the DM and asked if anybody else wanted to give it a shot. Luckily, one of my friends agreed. He suggested we give 4th edition a go, since he had good experiences with another group. He was enthusiastic, and I just wanted to keep on getting together with friends to play games in a fantasy setting.

What it comes down to: as long as it's enjoyable, it's fine by me. I'm not buying the books anymore, and I don't think 4th edition is better in any way than 3.5 or 2nd. It's way more limited and pre-fab. But you just compensate for that by role-playing. A good character concept never had to do with stats anyway, no matter how you roll them.

So 5th edition? If in a few years my friend asks me to give it a go, I'll probably agree. And we'll make it work, as long as I don't have to spend any more money on it. That I'm done with. If he wants to buy the books and figure things out... cool. I just want a reason to get together.

Well...

reading some articles a while back about 5e, Wizards has came out and said they want to get more in touch with the throw-back DnD style of sitting around a table with papers and pencils and play an RPG, not a mmo on table. They're also taking player feedback from an open audience not closed, which I've signed up to try and get into already >.>

So, I feel 5e might actually feel like DnD should be and not the way 4e came across to everyone.

...

I suspect it'll be more recognisably D&D than 4e and an attempt to win over Pathfinder people back to the 'brand'.

I doubt I'll play it unless, as Almerin suggests, there are people I want to play with who only know that system.

I might buy the books...

if it really is a great step up from 3.5 "caster edition" and a step away from the MMO table top.

If not, then I'll just torrent it all :p

hmmm...

To be honest, I highly doubt i would even try it, since I don't have any money just collecting dust so wouldn't be able to purchase the materials and I think there is only one other innmate in the GTA who might play tabletop DnD that I am aware.

I have no experience in table top games of DnD I prefer being able to write it out instead of saying it out loud.

yeah.

Table top and forums both have their advantages, table top being social interaction with friends, fast paced gaming and all that.

Forums have the character interaction, roleplaying and detail that you can't get in table top.

Just like how with Ginafae, her dark elf cleric lady and my Gnome Xaris from so long ago. Some forum games are just written so well it's like a story you never forget :p

It was certainly a great game. And Xaris was the toughest gnome you're ever likely to come across!

Well said, Almerin...

...personally, I haven't really bought any D&D "updates"/books/material since... well, waaaaay back when TSR was still running things... so, what, that's 2e at best, right? I have played other versions and, yes, have bought materials for other systems (Withcraft, Star Wars, and Serenity, most notably). I have not played 4e, at all, and doubt that I'll wade into 5e, either (unless, by some chance I end up in a game here at the Inn run on 5e). *shrugs*

Anyway, I'm with Almerin on this one... I don't think the version really matters as long as the DM/GM and the players all have fun with the game. It's not about the rules when it all boils down, is it? It's about spinning a fantastical tale of adventure and intrigue and having a helluva time with people you enjoy.

So, try it? Sure, if the opportunity presents itself...

Buy it? Not unless I've played in a game that makes me go "Holy shcnifferhat! I need to get those rules!!!"
